' The Augusta College Baseball
team took on West Chester Uni
versity this past weekend. After
holding off a late charge to take
Game One 8 -6, the Jaguars
‘¢ouldn’t slow down the visiting
Golden Rams and dropped Game
Two 12-9. Skip Fite’s club is now
“11-8 on the season and are get
ting set for the Peach Belt sea
son.
In Game One, Augusta Col
lege got started early jumping
ovut to a 5-0 lead through three
innings. Shortstop Matt Mixon,
who has been solid all season,
started off the fireworks by dou
bling in catcher Tory Tarleton
who had walked. Next, Mixon
scored on a double by first
baseman Brad McDuffie. It
would be McDuffie, Mixon, along
with the tablesetters third
baseman Cory Brown and desig

provided all the offense the Jags
needed, each collecting two hits.
Mixon had 3 RBIs while Jackson

Talk about a bad joke

Special to AUGUSTA FOCUS
A story caught my eye Tues
day morning and I must not only
mention it, but also voice my
opinion. It seemsthat a couple of
young baseball fans were the
targets of a cruel joke in Phoe
nix, Ariz. Longtime Oakland A’s
fan Ken Mystrom took his eight
vear-old twin boys Erik and
Corey to see the A’s in Cactus
League play Monday. The elder
Mystrom was probably more ex
cited about the game, but none

save of the season which is an
Augusta College single season
record. Scotty Smith allowed
four hits, three runs and struck
out four in five innings to earn
his fourth win of the season.
The finale was the exact oppo
site as West Chester, powered by
center fielder Tom Schneider’s
hitting, lead 7-0. Before Skip
Fite could even get his lineup
card turned in, Schneider went
3-3 with two walks and scored
five runs, including a two-run
homer in the second inning.
Augusta found themselves down
12-4 going into the bottom of the
seventh and the rally was on.
Leadoff man Cory Brown drew a
walk. Then Brian Mitchell dou
bled him in to make the score 12-
5. Pinch hitter Chris Kell sin
gled to right followed by walks to
Tarleton and Mixon. Next,
Ernest Mallard drew a bases
loaded walk to score Kelly. After
giving up three more bases-load
ed walks, relief pitcher Mike
Krautzel struck out Bryan
Mitchell to end Augusta’s rally.
Stephen Padgett took the loss
and is now 3-2. Cory Brown was
the only Jaguar with more than
one hit, going 2-3 with three runs
theless, Erik and Corey had gone
with autograph books in hand.
Mystrom instructed his kids to
go to the A’s bullpen where some
of the players had assembled.
The boys gave their autograph
book to an unidentified player
whosigned itand passed it down.
After several players had signed
the book, the boys were on their
way back to their father, all was
well, right? Wrong! After look

Mystrom recognized the names
for sure but they weren’t A’s play
