— From Go and Tell Pharaoh
Goand Tell Pharaoh: The Auto
biography of Reverend Al
Sharpton was written with veter
anjournalist Anthony Walton, and
offers a personal and powerful
memoir. In his own characteristi
cally forthright and penetrating
style, Sharpton takes readers be
yond the media caricatures and
stereotypesthat have defined him
in the eyes of many Americans,
revealing why he has become one
of the most significant, vibrant
voices of the African-American
community.
Sharpton grew up in a world of
protest marches and seedy night
clubs, deeply religious values and
flamboyant showbusiness leg
ends. But with the shooting of
four black youths by subway vig
ilante Bernhard Goetz, Sharpton
realized he had to use his experi
ences to fashion a more activist
approach incommunicating needs
and concerns of the black commu
nity.
In Go and Tell Pharaoh
Sharpton addresses some of the
most divisive issues facing Amer
ica today, including structural
flaws in the judicial system; in
herent unfairness built into legal
statutes along racial lines; preoc-
na of a UNCF university. Like
most Americans, the Powells un
derstand the connection between
education and success in life. We
are delighted that they chose to
express their support ofeducation
through UNCF.”

cupation with crime committed
by blacks; black nationalism and
the growing rift between blacks
and Jews; the need to open up the
political process; and inaccurate
mediainterpretations ofthe black
community. He also offers candid,
no-holds-barred assessments of
local and national political figures
and celebrities, including Jesse
Jackson, Mario Cuomo, Don King,
Ed Koch, David Dinkins, Michael
Jackson, Geraldine Ferraro, Rob
ert Abrams and Elizabeth
Holtzman.
Sharpton stresses the need for
young African Americans to un
derstand the progress blacks
have made, the importance of
setting their sights on a destina
tion, choosing the right heroes,
and putting substance over sym
bolism. He also explains why
media criticism, accusations from
political foes, and other attempts
to slow him down will always
fail. “I didn’t want tobe one of the
boysinthe club. ... And that’s the
difference. I was only interested
in justice, and that’s still all ’'m
interested in. I want the country
to work for everybody; I want
every little kid to have a chance
to become whatever he or she
can imagine; I want to help my
people out from under the grip of
Pharaoh —the blind and arro
gant indifference to their lives
and hopes by individuals and
institutionsin the country of their
births that has maimed, for no
reason, so many for so long.”
tion,” highlights the Powells’ be
lief in education and the value it
had in preparing them for their
lives. Mrs. Powell begins the nar
ration by telling viewers, “My
grandfather was born a slave, but
he and my grandmother went to
college and becameteachers...The
power ofeducation was made very
cleartome.” Despite the gravity of
the message, the PSA is light
hearted. It uses humorous ex
changes between the Powells to
show their devotion to each other
as well as their strong support of
higher education. At the end of
the spot, Gen. Powell encourages
viewers to support UNCF —soall
young people can reach their po
tential. :
“I am very honored to become a
member of The College Fund’s
Board of Directors,” said Gen.
Powell. “I look forward to helping
to further the Board’s efforts to
serve America by educating its
youth.”
