It was fun when I used to read for free
By Lillian Wan
AUGUSTA FOCUS Staff Writer
While I was typing up the in
formation on the Summer Read
ing Club sponsored by the East
Central Georgia Regional Li
brary System, I was amused by
the prizes that were mentioned.
Notthat thecoupons forice cream
and baseball tickets were funny.
I remember how much I wanted
to read as many books as possi
ble when I was younger. There
was no need of rewards in order
toread, no set minimum number
of books to have to reach. Books
by themselves were enticement
enough towant toread and learn
from. Part of it may have been
my hearing problem. I couldn’t
enjoy TV or radio or records very
well. With books, I never had to
worry about lip reading them or
straining to hear them.
Books were instantly gratify

point at any time. I could always

come back to a particular spot or
start reading from an entirely
different page from where I left
off. Isl didn’t understand a cer
tain sentence the first timelread
it, I could reread it as often as I
needed to.
Recently, a famous writer was
quoted as saying that books will
become dead due to the advances
of the Internet system. I dis
agree. Computers can be handy
in the form of laptops but most
people cannot afford them. Com
puters can be easy to handle for
reading with the scroll bars on a
screen and/or the use of a mouse,
but nothing can compare with
the handiness of having all parts
of a book or other reading mate
rial tangibly in front of you, avail
able for you to automatically
make a particular page appear
in front of you. Books donot need
more RAM in order for you to
speed up the reading process.
