Augusta Con 24 will focus on comic and
science-fiction artists and writers

AUGUSTA FOCUS Staff Writer
Augusta Con 24, the 24th bian
nual sci-fi con sponsored by the
Augusta Book Exchange, will be
held at the Sheraton Hotel at
Bobby Jones and Wheeler Road
on Saturday and Sunday, June 1
and 2. Tickets will be $6 for both
days, $4 for Sunday only at the
door. Advance tickets may be
bought at any location of the
Augusta Book Exchange. The
convention will have various
comics, cards, gaming, toys, vid
eos and collectibles. Hours will
be 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. on Saturday
and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Special guests will include a
variety of comic and sci-fi artists
and writers such as Roger Brown,
Xavier Jones, Roy Thomas, Roel
Wielinga, Sheldon Eastman, and
Steve Rushbrook. There will also
be White Wolf's Rage and MAG
IC the Gathering tournaments.
Roger Brown is a popular local
comics writer and artist. Among
his numerous published works,

he has drawn and/or written for
such periodicals as Disney Ad
ventures Magazine, Parade Mag
azine, CRACKED magazine, Dis
ney Comic Hits, Spider-Man
Magazine, National Enquirer
and Tiny Toons magazine. He
also worked on Trek Toons, a
paperback book of cartoon songs
on Star Trek; narration for a set
of Star Trek trading cards; a comic
poster as well as cartoons for
Augusta Magazine.
Roy Thomas has a 30-year ca
reer as a writer and editor of
numerous comic books. His pre
vious works include Conan the
Barbarian, The Incredible Hulk,
Doctor Strange, Fantastic Four,
SonofVulcan, Sub-Mariner, The
X-Men, The Avengers and Cap
tain America among many oth
ers. He had also written the
script for the second Conan the
Destroyer movie.
Xavier Jones is another popu
lar local artist who will be at the
convention. He will be selling
paintings and air-brushed T
shirts, including some Star Trek
designs that he is well known

Local sci-fi groups will also be
represented at the convention.
The USS Star League, CSRA
chapter of STARFLEET, the In
ternational Star Trek Fan Asso
ciation, will be present along with
two local Klingon-based groups
representing KAG: IKV Cerberus
and IKV Dark Storm. All three
local groups have been involved
with serious projects (highway
cleanup, adopt-an-endangered
animal programs, Ronald
McDonald House, the Augusta
Child Advocacy Center, Rainbow
Revue and other community ser
vice work) as well as the fun stuff
such as working at Star Trek
conventions, critiquing Star Trek
shows, making Star Trek cos
tumes, etc. Come meet the Trek
kers and ask them questions
about theirrespective local chap
ters.

Author Janelle Taylor will be
the guest of honor at a “Meet the
Author” reception at the Gibbs
Memorial Libraryon June 1, from
2-4 p.m. Ms. Taylor, aninterna
tionally-known romance novel
ist, has written 34 books, includ
ing several New York Times
bestsellers.
Before beginning her writing
career, Ms. Taylor worked as an
orthodontic nurse and as a re
search technologist. She began
to write in 1977. By 1994, she
had published 33 books, plus sev
en contributions to the works of
other authors. She has 30 mil
lion copies of her works in print
worldwide, including seven New
York Times bestsellers (First
Love, Wild Love; Savage Con
quest; Stolen Ecstasy; Moondust
and Madness; Kiss of the Night
