internship program for teachers

her students.
Ms. Lawrence is one of approx
imately 100 Georgia teachers
participating this summerin the
Georgia Internships for Teach
ers program. The program, im
plemented by Gov. Zell Miller in
1991, matches selected Georgia
math and science teachers with
different segments of industry to
keep them abreast of develop
ments in the subjects they teach.

ship between industry and teach
ers,” Ms. Lawrence said. “It’s an
ongoing process of mentorship
and role-modeling and gives us

The U.S. Department of Energy
invites you to participate in the development of
DOE’s Office of Environmental Management
and the Savannah River Site’s 10-Year Plan
The Savannah River Operations Office is holding a public meeting to discuss with
stakeholders the 10-year plan being developed by DOE’s Office of Environmental
Management and how it will pertain to SRS.
The intent of the 10-year plan is to lay out how DOE will clean up the Savannah
River Site and other sites in the DOE complex.
SRS is developing its own 10-year plan and looks forward to hearing what you feel
should be included in the SRS plan at this meeting.

services this summer are funded
by Bell South through a Georgia
Institute of Technology grant.
Area math and science teachers
were invited to apply for the po
sition, and MCG Rural Health
Outreach Program Director Nan
cy Williamson chose Ms.
Lawrence.
MCG’s Rural Health Outreach
Program is an effort to lower
Georgia’s infant mortality rate
by improving prenatal services
in rural Georgia. One service of
the program is a free prenatal
center for residents of rural
Jefferson County whose babies
are delivered at MCG.
Areas of particular interest to
Ms. Lawrence include date col-
emergencies, and cope with bore
dom and fear. They will develop a
greater sense of security and in
dependence, and you will feel more
comfortable and less worried about

tional factors affecting pregnant
women. She also hopes the pre
natal center’s clientele, which
consists largely of young women,
will help her better relate to the
teens she teaches.
“I'm very excited about work
ing with Ms. Lawrence,” Dr.
Williamson said. “A lot of things
we do will be useful, not only in
teaching math, but in helping
her understand environmental
factors that can affect the learn
ing process.”
“This is a very positive pro
gram. I’d love for other teachers
to be able to experience what I'm
experiencing,” Ms. Lawrence
said. “'m gaining expertise in
areas that I'll be able to draw on
from now on.”
Hospital will be sponsoring this
class on Saturday, July 20, from 9
a.m. until 2 p.m. The cost is $lO

Mr. David Whatley, director of
the VA Medical Center, has an
nounced the selection of Ms.
Joanne Carr, R.N.,, M.S.N., as
the associate director for patient
services. :
Her responsibilities as the as
sociate director for patient ser
vices include the supervision of
social work service, nutrition and
food service, as well as the 725
nurses who are employed at the
Medical Center.
Ms. Carr, anative of Pensacola,
Fla.,attended the School of Nurs
ing at Florida State University
where she earned her bachelor of
science degree. She earned a
master of science degree in nurs
ing from Emory University in
Atlanta.
