Joins in criticism of museum
We join Dr. Leslie J. Pollard in
his concern regarding the com
ments made by Richard Wescott,
director ofthe Augusta-Richmond
County Museum. The willful ex
clusion of any exhibit based on
race is unacceptable. Of greater
concern are the inane and bigoted
reasons given by Mr. Wescott in
his attempt to justify the exclu
sion of an African-American ex
hibit. It is profoundly disrespect
ful for a public official to refer to
any group of citizens as “you peo
Telecom bill passage mixed blessing
The Georgia Legislature voted
in 1995 to establish our state as
a leader in the development of a
competitive telecommunications
marketplace. It passed Senate
Bill 137 into law which provided
the benefits of greater choice for
Georgia’s consumers and will be
a boon to businesses as competi
tion flourish. Bell South actively
endorsed passage of this law, as
well as the national telecommu

Illiteracy the root of all evil
Much s in the news these days
about education. Illiteracy is a
problem affecting directly 27
millionilliterate American adults
and indirectly all the rest of us
Americans. You may assume
that, because you can read this,
illiteracy is no problem for you.
Illiteracy lowers business pro
ductivity. Illiterates may not be
able to learn enough to know the
difference between low and high
quality. During training, every
thing must be explained orally to
illiterates. These costs are passed

The focus of the Augusta-Rich

of the “Sister” Lucy Craft Laney

In spite of Georgia’s opportu

Insurance rates are based on av

Companies leave America to
go where the worker can read.
The jobs go too. Revenues de

areas where illiteracy and re

Now is the time to stop illiter

With changes in healthcare
