Faulker Award for Fiction for his historical

returns with Ten Indians, another explora
tion of racial unrest, this time set in contem
porary Baltimore where a young, inner-city
gang is being killed off in a virulent web of
drug wars and poverty.
When Mike Devlin opens a Tae Kwon Do
school in a black, inner-city neighborhood,
he is the ultimate outsider: a white, middle
class, middle-aged professional with a sta
ble family, a comfortable home, and a per
haps too-settled life that feels both privi
leged and empty. A developing sense of
community compels him to enter this differ
ent world, at whose desperation and harsh
ness he can only guess.
When Devlin’s daughter becomes involved
with Trig, the group’s leader, Mike is pulled
into the hellfire. The brutality of the streets
and a series of violent deaths and deadly
misunderstandings shock him into seeing
the limit of his influence and taking the true
measure of his desire to help others and to
change himself.
In a complex, fast-paced narrative, sever
al richly nuanced voices weave a powerful,
deeply affecting story of possibility — hope
ful and dangerous — among people whose
connection is often defined only by its im
possibility.
About the author
Madison Smartt Bell is the author of two
collections of short stories and eight novels,
most recently the novel All Souis’ Rising
(published in paperback by Penguin in No
vember), which was a National Book Award
finalist and a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner
Award for Fiction in 1995. Bell was recently
named one of the Best Young American
Novelists under 40 by Granta. He lives in
Baltimore.

The deadline is March 28. You
may request a first and second
choice of professional staff mem
ber for critique of your manuscript
and a personal consultation. As
signments are on a first-received
basis. There will be no consulta
tion sign-ups at the conference
itself. Information on your consul
tation date and time will be sent to
you approximately one week be
fore the conference.
Submit 2 copies of your typed,
double-spaced manuscript. To al
low for an anonymous reading of
your manuscript, include a cover
sheet on which you provide your
name and address, the category of
your submission, and your prefer
ence for a consultation date and
