“Bringing the blues to Augusta is what we’re all about,” said Mr. Fogarty, 50, owner of The
Garage, 1102 Broad Street. Photo: Timothy Cox

Special to AUGUSTA FOCUS
Two months ago, Bob Fogarty
opened a blues club in downtown
Augusta. Though his clientele is
steadily growing, there’s one fac
tion he says is noticeably missing.
African-American patrons.
“Blues is a large part of the
African-American heritage, and
my main objective is to promote a
club, downtown, that’s receptive
to all people and all ages. Every
body. Bringing the blues to Au
gusta is what we’re all about,”
said Mr. Fogarty, 50, owner of The
Garage, 1102 Broad Street.
After witnessinga thrivingblues
scene in California and on Beale
Street in Memphis, Mr. Fogarty
came to the realization that a ven
uefeaturing liveblues was a miss
ing piece of Augusta’s burgeoning
downtown night scene.
“We'’re attracting a good mix of
ages from 21 up to 65. We get
everything from the dressed-up
types to the laid-back kind — just
a nice mixture of people. But, I'm
still disappointed with the small
number of black people who have
come out so far,” said the Dayton,
Ohio native.
“This is not a redneck type of
place. We go out of our way to
make sure everyone is comfort
ablehere,” said Mr. Fogarty, who’s
no relation to musician John

Unlike other Augusta venues,
The Garageisaone-of-a-kind club
that features live music six days a
week. Recent acts appearing on
the professionally constructed
stage are local favorites Leßoy
Lloyd and the Swinging Dukes,
The Other Brothers and vocalist
Cesar “The Emperor ofEntertain
ment.”
For the Leßoy Lloyd band, Mr.
Fogarty’s club has served as a
springboard of sorts from thelocal
“chitlin circuit” to a mainstream
audience.
“I didn’t know anything about
Leßoy’s band, but it seems all the
musicians knew of him. He’s great.
I'm just glad to be in a position to
let other people — especially the
younger ones — witness how tal
ented this guy and his band really
are,” said the clubowner.
Along with offering local enter
tainers a new place to work, Mr.
Fogarty also books groups from At
lanta, Baltimore, Washington D.C.,
Philadelphia, Nashville, Jackson
ville, New York and the U.K.
“It’s a nice place for the musi
cians to show their talents,” said
the former real estate and pet
store entrepreneur. The Garage

With adequate parking and a
big doorman who sits outside the
club’s 11th Street entrance all
night, Mr. Fogarty assures pro
spective customers of a comfort
able and safe environment — in
side and outside the club.
In what was formerly a
Goodyear tire and repair shop,
The Garage has been transformed
into one of the finest nightspots in
Augusta. The club, which is ad
joined to the Broad Street Diner,
is alsoprepared toserve hotlunch
es throughout the business day
and through the night.
Along with good food, Mr.
Fogarty said the club also pro
vides a well-stocked variety of
beverages and beer. “Wejust want
everyone to know what we're all
about. We're Augusta’s only blues
club, and we’re here for the peo
ple. And that does mean every
body,” he said with a smile.
The Garage is open Monday
through Saturday at 11 a.m. For
