'Tis the season for Falcons fans to give thanks!
Y
If you're a long-suffering Falcons
fan, the end of the season simply
could not have come fast enough.
For, as you know by now — your
team is clearly not too tough.
Holes in the defense allowed
teams to score at will through the
anr,
while the Atlanta offense sput
tered as if they really didn't care.
RB Craig “Iron Head” Heyward
started to show he is getting slow
and full of dents,
while the millionaire biscuit (LB
Cornelius Bennett) found out the
hard way that this team has a
way to go to get to the Super
Bowl-bound fence.
QB Jeff George was waved
goodbye for telling the truth, but
someone forgot that back-up
Bobby Hebert was really aloof (at
the notion of being a No. 1 man —
again).
So as the season progressed, time
and time again,
the team continued to fail each
Sunday’s NFL exam.
The pressure of losing made even
the toughest men on the “birds of
prey” crack and beg not to come
back
(just ask defensive star Chuck
Smith).
And who could blame them? That
run-and-shoot offense is an old
and unimaginative plan of attack.
Finally Rankin and the rest of the
Smith family have tried to close
the door,
by firing June Jones after 3
seasons (19-29 record) of Atlanta’s
fans swearing and pleading,
“Please June, no more!”
But has this move come too late
to turn around 30 years of bad
luck and poor attendance figures
at the gate?
Almost all departments have felt
the chill,
especially kicker Morten Ander
son, who waited ‘il the end of the
season to muff'a 31-yarder and a
sure victory over playoff-bound
Jacksonville.
Well, at least the Falcons can walk
away — and ponder the setting
sun with a wide grin, realizing
they made a few hundred thou
sand Jag fans drop down to their
knees (for one Sunday at least) —

to offer thanks to God for their
team the Falcons — amen, amen,
amen!
If you happen to be a long-time
Falcon fan in search of some hope
and good cheer,
you have but to wait until April of
the New Year.
Maybe, just maybe, luck will guide
a true-blue impact player your
team’s way in the draft, but don't
count on Manning, for he may
decide to stay put in college,

rather than face your “winning is
everything” wrath.
Don't count on a blockbuster
trade, or a free-agent stocking
stuffer to offer help in your team’s
endless fight,
to string together just two consec
utive seasons of winning, especial
ly on Monday night!
Until next season, take care and
stay safe, and remember to never
give up hope,
even though many of the current
Falcons clearly can no longer cope.
Year after year of losing has
definitely taken its toll.
Maybe a miracle will happen in
1997, but don’t count on heading
to the Super Bowl.
Happy Holidays!!!
