The School of Education at
Augusta State University has
reorganized to more effectively
administerits teacher education
programs, according te Dr. Rob
ert N. Freeman, dean of the
school.
The departmental reorganiza
tion will better serve students
and faculty in more than 30 pro
grams at thebaccalaureate, mas
ter and education specialist lev
els, he said.
The School of Education previ
ously consisted of two depart
ments, Teacher Education and
Health and Physical Education.

The Teacher Education Depart
ment has a large and varied set
of degree programs, Dr. Free
man said.
“Beyond the usual elementa
ry, middle and secondary school
teacher education programs, we
offer a master’s program in coun
seling and degrees in special ed
ucation, administration and su
pervision, art education, music
education, and others. We felt
that the coverage was so broad
as to not be efficient as a single
unit,” he said.
The reorganization dividesthe
Teacher Education Department
into two separate ones, the De
partment of Teacher Develop
ment and the Department of Clin
ical and Professional Studies.
Teacher Development will en
compass undergraduate and
graduate programsinearly child
hood education, middle grades
education, secondary education
and selected P-12 programs. Itis
chaired by Dr. Mary Gendernalik
Cooper.

Physical Education, chaired by
Dr. Richard D. Harrison, is the
third department. Itencompass
es undergraduate and graduate
programs in health and physical
education and wellness.
ASU President Dr. William A.
Bloodworth Jr. said it is crucial
for Augusta State to stand out,
with high quality and respect, in
the field of teacher preparation.
“Re-accreditation by NCATE —
the National Council for Accred
itation of Teacher Education —
is important tc us. This impor
tance is reflected in the reorga
nization,” Bloodworth said.
NCATE and the Professional
Standards Commission require
that schools of education be or
ganized in a manner to provide
maximum support for faculty in
teaching undergraduate and
graduate students, Dr. Freeman
said. “Students will now have
greater access to their advisors,
instructors and other support
services,” he added.
