This month's cover story focuses
on the historic Black women's organi
zation, the National Association of
Colored Women's Clubs and its lead
ership role inthe area of community
building. This AOIP-affiliated organi
zation (along with the Federation of
Masons, the Imperial Court Daugh
ters of Isis, the National Council of
Negro Women, Phi Beta Sigma Fra
ternity, andthe Top Ladies of Distinc
tion) serves on AOIP's Interor
ganizational Liaison Committee,
which is responsible for insuring the
broadest possible-and equitable--in
volvement by all AOIP groups and
others in activities focused on AOIP
goal achievement.
As we celebrate this holiday sea
son of festivities, AOIP focuses on its
Goal #ll. This goal category simply
states that the Black community
needs to have at least 80 percent of
its families investing in ownership/
savings plans that enhance their fis
cal independence.
AOIP's Long-Range Planning and
Resource Identification Committee is
the Standing Committee which has
oversight of this goal category. The
AOIP nationally affiliated organiza
tions (and their heads) that take the
lead on this committee are: Omega
Psi Fraternity led by Dr. Dorsey Miller;

(i.e., lack of self-esteem and self-efficacy). However, two things were soon recognized. One thing recognized was that, whenever these root causes were
assaulted, we simultaneously were engaged in a processfor assaulting almost all the other ills imposed most heavily on the Black community (i.e., drugs,
other crimes, needless forms of welfare, teen pregnancy, etc.). The otherhinq_hrecognized was thatitwas impossible to assauit illitera%at its core among
many Black Americans without simultaneously addressing those other ills. That is when the amazing and long—needed Goals for The Year 2000 and |
Beyond (see Page 7) were developed, and the name changed to Assault On llliteracy Process, or simply AOIP. |

The idea behind this Black leader
ship-initiated U.S. Auto Industry Sup
port campaign--advocatin%the long
established focus of another AOlP
affiliated organization, SCLC led by
the renowned Dr. Joseph Lowery--
arose surrounding two concerns as
follows:
1) the need for Black Americans to
‘educate their spending dollars to
make more sense' as a means of
havingalong-needed and sufficiently
realistic economic base for motivat
ing our young and others to want to
learn so as to earn the opportunity of
obtaining a good-paying job that can
enable achievement of a responsible
and fulfilling lifestyle; and,
2) how best our Black leadership
groups could be far more supportive
of the three U.S. car makers (despite
the fact that they have provided many
more jobs and other economic
benefits to Black Americans than any
other corporations in America, and
have invested heavily and con
tinuously in various marketing and
advertising strategies embracing
