Dallas civil rights leaders continue
with plans to boycott Texaco
DALLAS
(AP) Two Dallas black leaders
continue to support a boycott of
Texacodespiteacallbythe NAACP
and the Rev. Jesse Jackson toend
the action.
A boycott of Texaco was orga
nized after tape recordings sur
faced on which Texacoexecutives
belittled blacks and plotted tode
stroy potentially incriminating
documents.
Jackson joined NAACP leaders
indeclaring an end tothe boycott
after Texaco vowed todiversify its
workforce and do more business
with minorities and women.
Dallas-area black leaders said
they’re waiting to see what kind of
effect the plan will have, espe
cially in Texas.
“People are still sending me cut
up Texaco cards,” said Lee Alcorn,
president of the Dallas NAACP.
“There are still some very deep
rooted feelingsin the community.”

the decision a mistake.
“I'mincensed,” Angelou toldThe
Wichita Eagle.“The veryideathat

very threatening, because it can

not to learn standard English.”
In a statement issued in Chi

“While we are fighting in Califor

action and fighting to teach our
children so they become more

madness has erupted over mak

“Youdon’t have togotoschool to

Oakland officials seemed sur
prised by the uproar.
The School Board met behind
closed doors Saturday morning to
finish business left over from the
late-running Wednesday night
meeting. Board member Toni Cook
said the board did not discuss the
policy, but she said school admin
istrators wrote a statement ex
plaining the intent of the policy.
