Shiloh Orphanage listed
in the National Register
The Shiloh Orphanage, located
at 1635 15th Street in Augusta,
was listed in the National Regis
ter of Historic Places on Decem
ber 30, 1996.
The Shiloh Orphanage consists
of three buildings: Strong Acade
my (1910), the Girls Dormitory
(1927) and the Boys Dormitory
(1936). Strong Academy is a front
gabled building with a hipped
roof front porch with rectangular
columns, weatherboard siding,
concrete-pier foundation, and 6/6
double-hung windows. the Girls
Dormitory is a one-story brick
building with understated Colo
nial Revival detailing, side-gabled
roof, and decorative brickwork.
The Boys Dormitory is a one-sto
ry, brick building with Colonial
Revival detailing, raised seam
metal side-gabled roof, decorative
brickwork, and a brick entry
pedimented portico with recessed
double-door entrance.
The Shiloh Orphanage complex
is significant in terms of social
and African-American history as
representing how the Augusta
community provided housing, care
and education for African-Ameri
ran children without families. The

vival details.
The nomination of the Shiloh
Orphanage to the National Regis
ter was sponsored by the Shiloh
Comprehensive Community Cen
ter and Historic Augusta.
The National Registeris the fed
eral government’s official list of
historic buildings, structures,
sites, objects and districts worthy
of preservation. According to Ri
chard Cloues, deputy state histor
ic preservation officer, listing in
the National Register recognizes
a property’s significance and en
sures that the property will be
taken into account in the plan
ning of federally funded orlicensed
projects. In addition, owners of
income-producing National Reg
ister properties may be eligible
for rehabilitation tax incentives.
