ClassClarenceSmalley,sonofMary
Smalley of Augusta, and son-in
law of Eli and Lauree Quiller of
Graniteville, S.C., is helping to
breathe lifeintothe Navy’s newest
aircraft carrier. .
Smalley says there are many
things that influenced his decision
to enlist. “I knew the Navy had
better schools and I could receive
some good training,” said the 29-
year-old sailor.
Named for America’s 33rd presi
dent, Truman will have a critical
mission once it joins the fleet in
1998. Aircraft carriers are the float
ing cities at the heart of most tra
ditional battlegroups, employing
nearly 6,000 men and women be
tween its own crew, embarked
squadrons and staffs. Carriershave
been called America’s most flexible
tool for diplomacy.
Nimitz-classaircraft carriersare
the largest and most formidable
ships ever put to sea. Measuring
more than three football ships ever
put to sea. Measuring more than
three football fields in length and
as tall as a 24-story building,
Truman will serve as a highly
visible deterrent to would-be ag
gressors, and if deterrence fails,
offer the most versatile and power
ful weapons systems available.

as well as operate more than 80
combat-proven aircraft from its
decks. Operatingand maintaining
these systems will be the responsi
bility of Navy men and women, like
Smalley.
As a machinist’s mate, Smalley
will be respensible for taking care
of the ship’s engines. “I work with
boilers, evaporators, heatexchang
ersand elevators,” he sgid.
As “plankowners,” Smalley and
the men and women of Harry S.
Truman have the.distinction of
being the first crew on the Navy’s
newest Nimitz-class aircraft car
rier. The term plankowner dates
back to more than 200 years of
shipbuilding, tothedays when ships
were wooden. According to tradi
tion, members of the commission
ingcrew were assigned one wooden
plank of the shiptobe claimed after
it was decommissioned and disas
sembled.
Smalley, who is married to the
former LaTonya Quiller and has
two children, Takera, 4, and
Clarence, 11 months, says he in
tends tostay in the Navyuntil he’s
eligible toretire. “I plan to concen
trate on keeping my family focus
and preparing my children for col
lege,” he said.
