Historic Cotton Exchange hosts traveling exhibit
A new traveling exhibit on “the
role of the frontier in the making of
astate” produced by Milledgeville/
Baldwin County 2000+ opened Feb.
28 at the Historic Cotton Exchange
and Welcome Center. The exhibit
willbe atthe Cotton Exchange until
March 26, 1997.
Theexhibit recreatesin text, time
lines, graphics and artifacts
Georgia'sstruggletobecomeastate.
The Georgia Trust Colony and Royal
Colony capitals at Savannah, the
Revolutionary War fall-back at
Heard'’s Fort, the new up-country
capitalin Augusta, the first “perma
nent” capital at Louisville, and the
last frontier capital in Milledgeville
areall vital parts ofthe story. What
gives the exhibit life, however, are
the people. Native Americans who
werethe firstinhabitants, Spanish
explorerslookingforriches, English
men claiming land for the crown,
patriots eager to forge their own
country, and Europeans seeking

the words of the exhibit, “with each
frontiercapital established, Georgia’s
governmental stage shifted steadily
westward assuming the character
of the people living on that border.”
This traveling exhibit is just one
part of a larger initiative of
Milledgeville/Baldwin 2000+, acom
mittee organized in the early "90s
with the dream of establishing a
permanent museum based on the
works of the late Dr. James C.
Bonner, noted Georgia historianfrom
Milledgeville. The plan was todocu
ment Milledgeville’s 68-year-history
as the capital city of Georgia. The
group conducted workshops to ex
plore the possibilities and decided
the best way to fully understand
Milledgeville’s pivotal place in the
state’s history was tostudy the evo
lution of Georgia’searly capitals. By
writinga grant request to the Geor
gia Humanities Council, the mu
seum secured partial funding and
gia State Lottery. Hislottery num
ber-picking machine brings all the
fast-paced fun ofthe televised draw
ing into the home. Since some
state lotteries are combined, the
home lottery game can be a family
event. It can also be used at par
ties, because the number of play
encouragement tohelpdeveloptheir
project. After traveling to former
capitals of Georgia, the exhibit will
return to Milledgeville. The rest of
the Old Capital saga, after the fron
tier vanished with the removal of
the Cherokeesin 1840, will be treated
inanexpanded permanent museum
scheduled to open in the Old State
house on the Georgia Military Col
lege campus in 1998.
“The project has really been a
group effort,” says Milledgeville/
Baldwin County 2000+ Chair Beegee
Baugh. “Once the story line was
selected by theexhibit steering com
mittee, a variety of different com
mittees have been workingtogather
theresearch, graphics and artifacts
needed to enliven the exhibition.
The exhibit text was written by
committee member Betty Snyder
with the help from history and mu
seum consultants and editorial ad
visors across the state. Allied Arts
hasprovided meetingspaceand tech-
ers is limitless. The device is
portable, compact and easy to use
when choosing numbers for actual
statelotteries or playing other popu
lar “quick pick” games.

and the Georgia Council for the Arts,
the city of Milledgeville, the Baldwin
County commissioners, Georgia Mili
tary College, the Milledgeville/Baldwin
County 2000+ membership and
Milledgeville-Baldwin County Allied
Arts.

Dr. Lucid was selected “for her
technical expertise, dedicated ser
vice and pioneering spirit asaspace
shuttle astronaut, whoset the record
for the longest duration in space by
a U.S. astronaut and longest space

was done while performing numer
ous life science experiments that

shuttle missions. Lucid has flown on
five shuttle missions including her

spacestation Mirlastyear. Dr. Lucid
holds pilot ratings in commercial, in
strumentand multi-engineaircraft.
