(AP) The Environmental Pro
n Agency is considering a
exposure level for mercury
t may make some common fish
limits for consumers, say two
ers.
‘ln an analysis to be printed Fri
day in the journal Science, Grace
M. Egeland and Dr. John P.
Middaugh of the Alaska Depart
ment of Health said EPA is using
data from a 25-year-old study of a
massive mercury poisoningin Iraq
to set standards that will affect
fish eaters of today.
“The EPA is using a process
designed to clean up mercury from
emissions” to set standards that
will affect the allowed levels of
mercury in food fish, said Egeland.
“That is like comparingapplesand

Mercuryis presentin the Earth’s
crust and is released by the burn
ing of some fuels and from some
industrial processes. The metal is

by hg:- fish, the mercury as

parts per million now in bass, crap

fish would be severely limited.
In Wisconsin, the state has is

The 1997 guide listed 308 places
where fish are contaminated with
mercury.
The proposed EPA standards are
based on an acute poisoning epi
sode in Iraq in which 6,000 people
were hospitalized and 400 died
after eatingbread made from grain
that had been treated with a mer
cury-based fungicide.
Based on that data, said Egeland,
people would be limited to about
four ounces of fish a week to stay

within the mercury limits.
Yet studies of 700 women in the
Seychelles Islands, where people
routinely eat 10 to 14 fish meals a
week, shows that no health disor
der was caused from the mercury
absorbed from the fish.
Analysis of the hair from the
women showed a mercury content
of 6.6 parts per million, which is
about 10 times the level suggested
by the proposed EPA guidelines,
she said.
Egeland said the World Health
Organization is recommending a
limit on mercury consumption that
is about five times the ceiling un
der EPA consideration. Under the
WHO standards, people could eat
about 20 ounces of fish a week,
compared to only about four
ounces under the proposed EPA
standards.
The proposed EPA regulations
would lead to limited fish eating
by sports fishermen and by
subsistance fishermen because fish

mercury levels that would exceed
the EPA limits, she said.
“We are afraid that these regu
lations will discourage fish eating,
when studies of fish eaters show
that it can be safe and beneficial,”
said Egeland.
She said fish is the only common
source for Omega 3, a fat that is
known to help combat heart dis
ease.
A request was made to the EPA
for comment on the study, but the
agency did not respond.
