DEAR POLLY — I am ans
wering Denise, who always we
ars holes in the toes of her can
vas shoes before the rest of the
shoe wears out. I had this pro
blem for years and finally ask
ed the clerk from whom I was
buying a new pair what caused
this. I was told that I had been
buying the shoes too small. I
bought the new ones one-half size
larger than usual and there are
no more holes in the toes.—
MRS. L.E.
DEAR GIRLS — Most canvas
shoes shrink a bit when washed,
so it is well to make an allo
wance for that, too. —POLLY
DEAR POLLY — I want to tell
Denise that, prior to wearing
new tennis shoes, I always stick
a piece of adhesive tape on the
inside of the shoe and under the
place where my toe comes
through. The tape will come off

when the shoe is washed, but it
is easy to Insert a new piece.—

DEAR POLLY — Denise
should cut circles or ovals from
moleskin foot plasters, etc., and
stick these to the underside of
the shoe. Smooth into place with
a spatula or table knife.—ELZO

DEAR POLLY — I need help.
I have been saving those pretty
nylon bags that fruit and vege
tables come in. They are strong
and of different weights, so there
must be some good use for them.
How does one sew or fasten
them together? I wonder if they
could be used to make scrub
bing balls and, if so, how would
the balls be formed and then
fastened? — E.E.
DEAR POLLY — When my
charm bracelet or pendant chain
looks a bit tarnished, I take a
small amount of baking soda,
dampen it and, with an old
toothbrush, rub the ornament,
which is held in the palm of my
hand. — MAVIS

A FRAGRANT CHRISTMAS MORNING will be the order
of the day after Santa empties his pouch. Charm her with
a couture designed bottle (upper left) of perfume. You
can wish her a cool Yule with a fragrant gift of (lower left)
friction cologne. For the really superfemale on your list,
why not give a treasure chest (right), containing bath oil,
solid perfume in an enamel compact and chiffon de par
fum? Two drawers below hold cologne, sachet, perfume
rollette and three cakes of bath soap. Makes a lovely
jewelry box afterwards.

Clean Stain 0.. ton
When starch discolors the
bottom of your iron, use the
special paste cleaner for cop
per to remove it. Rub a thin
paste on the iron, rinse out the
sponge with clean water and
wipe off the bottom of the iron
until water forms in droplets.
This film will make the iron
slide easily.
Accessories Aid Image
A woman’s appearance de
pends on her accessories as
much as her clothes. Just as
the right stockings, shoes and
handbag are essential, in-the
bag accessories, such as a
fine compact, lipstick case
and combs, are also an im
portant part of her image.

Portable Presser
To touch up difficult areas
of a garment—pleats, creases,
collars or cuffs—there is a
small portable hand presser
that plugs into an electric out
