Flu Spread Closes
Franklin Schools
CARNESVILLE, Ga. (UPI)—
Franklin County schools will
close for the Christmas holidays
today because of an Influenza
epidemic which has quadrupled
normal absenteeism.
School Supt. Ed Bryant an
nounced Thursday night the
Franklin County high school
and all four grammar schools
will close about noon today.
They were originally scheduled
to begin the holidays next
Wednesday.
Bryant said more than 500
students have been absent each
day this week. Most are suf
fering a 48-hour virus which is
described as similar to Asian
flu. Bryant said the flu is ac
companied by nausea, chest
pains, and fever.
He said a number of teach
ers, school workers and bus
drivers have also been affect-

In Wreck Deaths
ATLANTA (UPI)—A U.S. Dis
trict court has awarded an At
lanta teen - ager whose parents
and sister were killed In a 1964
automobile accident a $150,000
Judgment against the federal
government.
The youth, Robert Earl Ras
mussen, 15, was seriously in
jured In the wreck near Hardee
ville, S. C., which killed his par
ents, Dr. and Mrs. Earl Ras
mussen and sister, Lauren Ras
mussen.
In a suit filed In his behalf
by the First National Bank of
Atlanta, it was alleged that a
government - owned dump truck
stopped In the middle of a nar
row bridge, causing a tractor
trailer truck to veer Into the
path of the Rasmussen car.
The suit charged that the
driver of the government ve
hicle did not give proper sig
nals, nor were warnings posted
that the truck was stopped on
the bridge.
The suit asked for $4 million
in damages.
The judgment was handed
down by Judge Newell Eden
field.

Infant Dies In
Kerosene Blaze
DACULA, Ga. (UPI) — The
eight - month -old son of Mrs.
Josephine Conner died Thurs
day afternoon when a kerosene
heater exploded. Flames from
the explosion prevented Mrs.
Conner, who was in the yard
when the stove exploded, from
rescuing the Infant from the
burning house.

ville food store has been sus
pened from participating in a
federal food stamp programs
for at least 90 days, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture an
nounced.
The agency said Thursday the
action was taken against a gro
cery owned by Charles F. Reh
berg for selling Ineligible items,
including alcoholic beverages.

Child Killed
On Birthday
ALBANY, Ga. (UPl)—Death
came to the birthday celebra
tion of 3 - year -old Steven
W. Black Thursday.
The child, whose father is a
professor at Albany State Col
lege, was struck and killed by
a car as he ran Into the street
in front of his home to greet
a friend.
Authorities said the boy had
spotted the friend and raced ex
citedly toward him. He was hit
by a car driven by Herbert
Stanley Brown, 59, of Albany.

Macon Man Slain
In Travernßrawl
MACON, Ga. (UPI)—A Ma
con man was shot to death fol
lowing an argument In a tavern
Thursday night, police said.
Walter Lee Hester, 38, was
dead on arrival at Macon Hos
pital. He had two bullet wounds
in the chest.
Police arrested a 40-year-old
man and were questioning him
in the shooting.
Officers said Hester and an
other man argued in the tavern
and the second man left. When
he returned a short time later,
he leveled a pistol at Hester
and said, “I told you I’d get
you,” then opened fire, police
said.

Court’s Ruling
ATLANTA (UPl)—Sen. Her
man E. Talmadge, D - Ga., to
day criticized the U.S. Supreme
Court for striking down a law
prohibiting Communists from
working in defense plants.
Talmadge told an Atlanta civ
ic club that the ruling was
“consistent with the court’s ap
parent determination to show
more concern for the alleged
rights of Communists and crim
inals than for the safety and
security of the people in this
country.”
Talmadge called the decision
“another stroke for commu
nism.
