★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★*★ SPORTS ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Redlegs derail Dodgers, 6-3 By CHRIS SCHERF UPI Sports Writer Sparky Anderson was deter mined not to start any controversies. “All I’ll say is (David) Concepcion is the best shortstop in baseball,’’ the usually talkative Reds’ manager said, limiting his postgame remarks Friday to that and “no comments” on the pennant race. Concepcion’s three-run homer in the eighth inning carried Cincinnati to a 6-3 victory over the Dodgers in the opener of the final series of the year between the teams, cutting Los Angeles’ lead in the National League West to 2% games. Concepcion also set up another run in the fourth by walking and stealing second and third before scoring on an infield out. “I feel I’ve become a real major league hitter,” Concep cion said. He’s made believers of the Dodgers. His game-winning homer Friday was his 12th, equalling his four-year career total prior to this season. And with 70 runs batted in this year, Concepcion leads major league shortstops. Concepcion had turned a tight 3-2 Reds’ lead into a more comfortable 6-2 margin by slamming a Charley Hough knuckleball into the Dodger bullpen. The Reds’ victory was their only their fifth in 16 games with Los Angeles this season but extended Cincinnati’s winning streak to five consecutive games while snapping the Dodgers’ win skein at five. Jack Billingham handled the Dodgers for 7 1-3 innings before Clay Carroll came on with one out in the eighth to preserve the right-hander’s 19th victory, tops in the NL. Tony Perez also homered for the Reds, while Ron Cey had a solo shot for the Dodgers. The NL East race also tightened as Bake Mcßride did his thing. Mcßride singled home the winning run in the 17th inning as the Cardinals pulled to within a half-game of division leading Pittsburgh with a 7-3 You xf* look fO s reat! al I It must be Coj|| Reeves Cleaners, Inc.
