Hijackers seize plane
BEIRUT (UPI) - Two
hijackers reported to be Pales
tinian guerrillas seized a
British Airways jet today, shot
a stewardess and forced the
pilot to land in Libya after a
six-hour flight across the
Mediterranean Sea.
A statement distributed in
Beirut by Palestinians calling
themselves “the Martyr Abou
Mahmoud Group” claimed re
sponsibility for the hijacking.
Their statement warned “all
institutions and governments to

The statement, however,
made no mention of any
demands and said merely that
the hijackers would present the
group’s demands “at the
appropriate time.”
An airline spokesman said
the hijacked super VCIO with 37
persons aboard landed at
Tripoli at 8:32 a.m. (1:32 a.m.
EST)

Three hours later, authorities
said negotiations with the
hijackers had begun but
released no details.
The plane was not refueled,
officials said.
Abou Mahmoud was the
reputed mastermind behind the
Palestinian guerrillaattack on a
Pan American airliner at Rome
Airport last December that
killed 32 persons. Those com
mandos then hijacked a Luf
thansa airline to Kuwait.

unknown assassins.
A Libyan army officer at
Tripoli Airport said there was
no communication from the
plane and aim of the hijackers
was a mystery.
“They have not identified
themselves,” the officer said.
“They speak Arabic and all
they have said is ‘We only want
fuel. We only want fuel.”
The hijackers commandeered
the jet, British Airways Flight
870, at 2 a.m. during a stop in
the Arab sheikhdom of Dubai.
The plane was traveling from
London to Bahrein with stops in
Beirut, Dubai, Calcutta and
Singapore.
An airline spokesman in the
Persian Gulf state said shots
were fired as the gunmen ran
to the plane and ordered
disembarking passengers and
crew members back into the
aircraft.
The hijackers shot Indian
stewardess Nimma Subba in
the back during the takeover,
but she managed to get to the
airport terminal. Her condition
was not reported as serious.

First grade students of Mrs. Mary Chaplin and Miss
Kathy Clark at Beaverbrook elementary put on a play
about America and invited their parents to see it at the
school. After the play, the youngsters cooked a Pilgrim
breakfast for their guests.
While the
price of just about
everything is
skyrocketing,
it’s nice to know
there’s still a
place where you
cangeta
down-to-earth deal.
