If you attend inauguration Bring money, patience, long johns WASHINGTON (AP) - If you’re planning to attend Jim my Carter’s inaugural celebra tions, bring money, patience and your long johns. And if you haven’t already booked a hotel room, be pre pared for sleeping-bag-room only. There’s a long list of free events for the public — and some 300,000 jus’ plain folks have been invited — but many will be held outdoors. For instance, you can take a free sightseeing trip, but it will be in an open air tourmobile normally used in the summer. If the current low-20s chill continues, expect to bundle up, especially for the swearing-in ceremony, the parade and the early morning prayer service at the Lincoln Memorial — all on Jan. 20, which is inauguration day. Unlike previous in augurations, when hundreds of VIPs have been issued free in vitations to the main events, only 340 foreign ambassadors and their wives get in free this year. That may have come as somewhat of a shock to some of More smiles than tears at funeral BOSTON (AP) - Smiles of rememberance were more abundant than tears of mourn ing when friends gathered for the funeral of Roland Hayes, 89, one of the first blacks to win recognition as a classical singer. Ebenezer Baptist Church in Boston’s South End was filled with the strains of spirituals ar ranged by Hayes, the son of a Georgia slave. Among the songs performed by tenor Clay Douglas were, “I’m Goin’ Up to Heaven and Sit Down” and “Roun’ ‘Bout de Mountain.” Hayes, who won international acclaim as a concert tenor be ginning with a European tour in 1916, died Saturday after a long illness. Or 50 for the VIP couple planning to attend everything. “It’s a ‘People’s Inaugural’ and everyone will pay on an equal basis,” said Sue Vogelsi nger of the Carter inaugural committee. What that means, she said, is that the committee did not ac cept corporate contributions for more than $5,000 as inaugural committees did in previous years, so much of the bill for the so-called “People’s Inaugural” will be footed by the people who attend. The inaugural committee ex pects to recoup $l.B million of the total $3 million inaugural budget in ticket sales, Miss Vo gelsinger said. She said $750,000 already has been collected for commemorative medals sold by the Franklin Mint, and there are high hopes for collecting about $775,000 from the sale of inaugural books, inaugural art During his career, Hayes sang with symphony orchestras in Boston, New York, Phila delphia, Detroit, Paris, Amster dam, Vienna and Berlin and gave command performances for King George V of England and Queen Mother Maria Christina of Spain. His last con cert was in 1972. Walter Leonard, president elect of Fisk University, called Tuesday’s funeral an occasion for “a sense of rejoicing” over Hayes’ career. Hayes attended Fisk and had assisted the school's Jubilee singers. Hayes is survived by his wid ow, Helen; a daughter, soprano Afrika Lambe, and two grand daughters. — Griffin Daily News Wednesday, January 5,19a portfolios and special license plates. And there apparently will be plenty of people in town to buy them. The city’s hotels report they are booked up for the four in augural days of Jan. 18-21, said Marie Brookter, who handles hotel reservations for the in augural committee. She said those still hoping for accommodations in the city will have to rely on cancellations for hotel rooms that range in price from $33 a night for singles to as much as $l4O a night for a two bedroom suite. jBo/znce I 126 SOUTH HILL STREET January Clearance COATS 20 % °» I Group of *l/1 DRESSES and L/n 1 SPORTSWEAR /Z I Sizes 2 Toddler Thru Young Jrs.
