Thompson
in runoff
for sheriff
MACON Ga. (AP) - Bibb
County interim Sheriff Ray Wil
kes missed the majority he
needed to win Tuesday’s special
sheriff’s election without a
runoff by 10 votes out of 28,440,
unofficial figures show.
Wilkes, who received 14,210
votes, or 49.9 per cent, will face
former Macon Mayor Ronnie
Thompson in the runoff Jan. 25.
Thompson received 6,124 votes,
or 22 per cent.
He immediately challenged
Wilkes to a debate.
About 45 per cent of the coun
ty’s registered voters turned out
for the election, considerably
more than had been expected.
Sheriffs department investi
gator Don Arnett received 4,408
votes, or 15 per cent, and former
Sheriff James I. Wood 3,688, or
12.9 per cent.
Former Sheriff Jimmy Blood
worth resigned last October
.. when he pleaded guilty to a
charge of accepting $4,000 from
convicted gambler William N.
Hawes. He was sentenced to one
year in prison and four on
probation.
There were 10 write-in votes
in the sheriff’s election, in
cluding one for New York City
undercover police officer Frank
Serpico, who made headlines, a
book, a movie and a television
series after testifying against
corrupt fellow policemen.
Interim Dist. Atty. Walker
Johnson ran unopposed for dis
trict attorney for Bibb, Peach
and Crawford counties to re
place former Dist. Atty. Fred
Hasty. Hasty resigned two days
after he was re-elected Nov. 2,
citing ill health.
