Bums, associate professor of agronomy at the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station in Experiment. Bums has found that solid sludge from sewage treatment plants has the necessary characteristics for growing grass sod. “Sludge is lightweight, has good water retention, proper texture, and a supply of nutrients,” Burns told an audience at the joint annual meetings of the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America and the Soil Science Society of America in Houston, Texas. “Sod is in demand in large cities for use around both industrial and residential complexes.
