Spalding crime
is up 1 percent
Crime in Spalding County during 1976
increased one percent over 1975,
according to Sheriff Dwayne Gilbert in
a yearly report.
Os the 815 serious crimes investigated
by his department, 506 or 66 percent
were cleared by arrests. During 1975,
there were 797 serious crimes with 546
solved.
The rate of solving burglaries
continues to run low with only 34 out of
150 solved by arrests.
The number of break-ins during 1976
was down from 1975 by 17. Burglaries
include the breaking and entering of a
business, home or automobile, the
sheriff explained.
The Spalding Sheriff’s Department
investigated one criminal homicide and
cleared it with an arrest; three armed
robberies with one cleared; 350 assaults
with 347 cleared; 281 larcenies with 142
cleared; and 30 car thefts with 21
cleared.

adults, 18-years of age or more, and 40

Mrs. Blake
Mrs. Kate Wier Blake of 7 Lee
Lane, Weldon, N.C., died
Tuesday at the Guardian Care
Nursing Home in Roanoke
Rapids, N.C., where she had
been a patient for the past six
months.
A native of Decatur, Mrs.
Blake was a former resident of
Concord and widow of Mr. D. P.
Blake.
Her survivors include four
daughters, Mrs. E. H. Malone of
McDonough, Mrs. F. M.
Williams of Nashville, Tenn.,
Mrs. B. L. Carraway of Weldon,
N. C., and Mrs. Joseph B. Mack
of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sons,
H. B. Blake of Augusta and D.
P. Blake of Concord; a brother,
Robert Wier of Birmingham,
Ala.; 16 grandchildren and 18
great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted
Thursday morning at 11 o’clock
from the graveside in the
Friendship Presbyterian
Church in Pike County. The
Rev. Albert A. Tippit officiated.
Pittman Rawls Funeral Home
is in charge of plans. The family
requests in lieu of flowers those
desiring may make
contributions to the Friendship
Presbyterian Church in Pike
Church.
Mr. McClendon
The funeral for Mr. Lorenzo
McClendon will be conducted
Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock
from the Spring Hill Baptist
Church in Griffin. The Rev.
Dumas will officiate and burial
will be in the family cemetery in
Griffin.
Millers Funeral Home is in
charge of plans.
Rhubarb
Rhubarb, meaning a noisy
argument or quarrel, comes

saying “rhubarb" over and
over again to simulate angry
and menacing talk in crowd

were juveniles, under 18 years of age.
In addition, the sheriff’s department
made 87 arrests for driving under the
influence, 528 traffic arrests, and 370
arrests for other offenses.
There were 1,319 persons arrested on
warrants; 425 were served with civil
processes.
County lawmen answered 436 traffic
complaints, 432 domestic complaints,
304 reports of a prowler, and 2,327 other
types of complaints.
Deputies investigated 46 traffic
accidents.
Also, there were 13,903 checks made
on county businesses; 403 park security
detail hours worked; 195 hours were
spent investigating complaints of
improper use of the county’s trash
dumpsters; 171 trips made outside of
Spalding County to pick up prisoners
and seven trips made out of Georgia to
pick up prisoners.
A total of 4,294 subpoenas were
served.
Mrs. Gilbert
Mrs. Innell Melton Gilbert of
Route Two, Dripping Rock
Road, Molena, died Tuesday
night at the Medical Center of
Central Georgia in Macon.
The funeral will be Thursday
at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist
Church in Molena. Burial will
be in the Riggins cemetery in
Upson County.
The Rev. Bob Williams will
officiate.
Survivors include her
husband, James J. Gilbert, two
daughters, Mrs. Nyoke Rowe of
Marietta, Mrs. Feburia Reedy
of Thomaston; six sons, Jimmy
Gilbert of Concord, Randy W.
Gilbert, Wade Gilbert,
Thomaston, Harrington Gilbert,
Ricky Gilbert, Robert E.
Gilbert, all of Molena; 15
grandchildren.
She was a native of Upson
County and a member of Mt.
Olive Baptist Church.
Pasley-Fletcher Funeral
Home of Thomaston is in charge
of plans.
Mr. Banks
The funeral for Mr. Charles
E. Banks of 310 Morris street
will be held Thursday afternoon
at 1 o’clock from the Parker
AME Church in Forsyth. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his mother,
Mrs. Lillian Franklin; father,
Albert Banks, Sr.; step-father,
Hugh A. Franklin, Sr., all of
Griffin; five sisters, Mrs. Lillie
Cleveland, Miss Jennifer
Banks, Miss Annie Banks, Miss
Bessie Banks and Miss Linda
Banks; four brothers, Albert
Banks, Jr., Gerald Banks, Hugh
Franklin, Sr., Claude Franklin,
all of Griffin; brother-in-law,
Horace Cleveland of Griffin;
and grandmothers, Mrs. Bessie
Mae Jones of Forsyth and Mrs.
Mary Carter of Griffin.
The cortege will assemble at
the residence at 12 noon

Awards banquet
Receiving awards at the Boys’ Club banquet Tuesday night were (1-rj Mark Dix of the East
Griffin Club and Anthony Nash of the East Solomon Club, both named Boy of the Year;
(back) Terry Kelly, and Mrs. Mary Hurt, both appreciation awards, and Dave Miller, a
past president, in recognition of his service and leadership. The Man-Boy award went to Ed
Crawford, retired probation officer.
Ceramics classes under way .

Recreation Department now is
taking registration for its adult
and young people’s ceramics.
Adults classes are held on
Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. until
12:30 p.m. and Thursdays from
6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.
