Big man in world of giants Living in a world of giants can be frustrating at times “especially when I’m waiting in line for something and all I can see is a lot of elbows and knees,’’ said John Cook who stands a little less than four-feet and is a Lamar State Bank trainee in Barnesville. “But I don’t let it brother me,” he added. “I don’t think about being at a great disadvantage because of my size or being discriminated against. We’re all discriminated against about one thing or another.” At Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, where Cook got a BS degree in finance, he found living in an apartment more convenient than the dormitory. “I had trouble reaching the knobs in the shower,” said Cook. In Barnesville, his home town, Cook lives in a mobile home. “Mobile homes have a built-in compactness that suits me fine,” he said. “There are a few things that could be better like the rod in the clothes closet, and an oven situated over the stove instead of under it, but I’m renting now so I haven’t made any changes. I plan to buy a mobile home soon; then I’ll make the needed changes/’ Cook ordered a special kit commonly used by paraplegics, to put on his car so that he controls it completely by hand. The kit, from New Jersey, cost him SIOO, according to Cook, anyone with common sense could put one on a car. Deciding on a career was a problem he had to consider carefully. He had always been interested in banking and after carefully weighing his limitations with the demands of the job, he went ahead with plans to persue a banking career. After graduation, Cook lined up a job with a major bank in Atlanta but it fell through.
