Grand Prix
TOKYO (AP) — The second
annual Japan Grand Prix,
scheduled for April, has been
canceled because of lack of time
to fully prepare for the event, a
spokesman for the sponsor said
today.
The spokesman noted that the
first Japan Grand Prix was held
last October and said many
financial contributors were
reluctant to put up money for an
April race because there was so
little time for a campaign
advertising the event.

Flames outbrawl
Boston Bruins, 6-3
ATLANTA (AP) — “It was an
exciting game,” said Atlanta
Flames Coach Fred Creighton,
adding, “I don’t like to see the
ruckus go on that long.”
Creighton was talking about
the Flames’ 6-3 rout of the Bos
ton Bruins Friday night in a
brawling National Hockey

119 minutes in penalties.
Bruins Coach Don Cherry of
fered a different view.
“It’s the first 5-1 game I’ve
ever seen when somebody runs
your goalie from behind,” he
said.
Atlanta winger John Gould
scored early in the first period on
his own rebound in front of the
net with assists from Rey

key role in SEC
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -
Time was when freshmen
weren’t allowed on the floor for
a varsity basketball game.
Tonight, they will play a key
role in the Southeastern Confer
ence matchup between Van
derbilt and third-ranked Ken
tucky.
The visiting Commodores
have turned to three freshmen
as starters and Kentucky could
be missing its first year flash,
Jay Shidler, because of a bout
with food poisoning.
Sophomore Truman Claytor
will replace Shidler in the start
ing lineup if he can’t play.
Also missing from the Ken
tucky lineup for the 7:30 p.m.
EST game at Rupp Arena will
be freshman Tim Stephens, who
has averaged only 2.5 points in
12 games this season, but
appeared recently to be getting
his touch back from his high
school days at McCreary
County, Ky.
“We’re not really sure that
Stephens will be able to play
even Monday night,” Kentucky
Comeau picked up the first of
two goals for the night by net
ting a 25-foot shot from the right
faceoff circle.
Gary Doak put the Bruins on
the scoreboard with 42 seconds
remaining in the period, firing
the puck off teammate Don
Marcotte’s skate and past At
lanta goalie Dan Bouchard.
The Flames boosted their
lead out of reach in a heated
second period which saw rener
ee Dave Newell hand out 52
minutes in penalties.
Atlanta’s Bobby Simpson
raised the margin to 3-1 before
the Flames got power play
