LAMB - Please tell us what effect drinking iced tea regularly will have on a 1-year-old child. The tea is made with a tea bag and hot water, then sweetened and ic ed. DEAR READER — A cup of tea as ordinarily brewed contains about half as much caffeine as brewed coffee. The tea bag and then diluting the tea with ice probably means it has as little as half that much — or about the amount found in a fourth of a cup of coffee. That is still a pretty good jolt for a small child. Incidentally, that is also about the amount of caffeine you find in a cup of cocoa. The caffeine may not hurt him but it is a nervous stimulant. It would be useful in a hyperactive child. Coffee is sometimes helpful in these cases because the caffeine has effects similar to the medicines used in hyperactive children. Otherwise, I would rather see the child get a cup of fruit juice or milk without the caffeine problems. I am sending you The Health Letter number 1-1, Coffee, Tea, Cola, Cocoa, for more information. Others who want this issue can send 50 cents for it with a long, stamped, self-addressed envelope. Just write to me in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Station, New York, NY 10019. DEAR DR. LAMB - Whenever I eat sweet or acid foods I have ulcers in my mouth. I would much ap preciate it if you would suggest any means to remedy such ulcers besides not eating such foods. DEAR READER - This condition is almost un treatable. I presume you are talking about canker sores. About one out of five of the population has them at any given time and the treatment is very unsatisfactory. These shallow ulcers have a grayish base and are on the lining of the cheeks inside the mouth and sometimes on the TV mailbag Parks victim of list’ By RICK ROBERTS Copley News Service HOLLYWOOD - The TV Mailbag: Q. A few of my friends and I have been wondering what ever happeneed to actor Larry Parks. We just saw the two movies about Al Jolson he made and don’t recall see ing him for years. — C. 8., Fortuna, Calif. A. Parks died in the earlier part of 1976. He was one of the early victims of the blacklist and didn’t work much from the mid-1950s on. In addition to the two films on Al Jolson, Parks appeared in a host of films as well as in Broadway production of “Golden Boy.” Q. Could you please repeat the biography on Randolph Mantooth from the show, “Emergency.” I know you wrote it a few years ago, but would appreciate if you could repeat it. — J. H., Belmont, Man. A. After nearly five years in the series, Mantooth has mixed feelings on the fame he tongue. The current thinking is that they are one of the im mune problems people have. That means you literally become allergic to yourself. Some chemical that your im mune system produces reacts with sensitized tissue in your mouth to cause the tissue destruction or ulcer. Although antibiotics are sometimes useful in preven ting secondary infections they will not remove the fun damental ulcer. The best you can do is keep the mouth clean and avoid irritating the ulcer. It will heal in one or two weeks. Anything that irritates the inside of the mouth may cause canker sores. This includes irritation with dentures, ac cidentally biting the inside of your cheek, irritation with the way you brush your teeth or anything that damages tissue. Canker sores also tend to occur in women just before the menstrual periods and may flare up during pregnan cy. However, I have seen them in many women who are well past the age of having either menstrual periods or pregnancy. Acid foods do seem to cause them in some people, in cluding tomatoes, citrus fruits, vinegar and foods con taining vinegar such as pickles, wines and chocolate. Some doctors paint the ul cer with silver nitrate. This causes a membrane to form over the ulcer and reduces the pain. You may get some benefit out of Proxigel which you can buy without a prescription. It comes in a tube and you can squeeze a lit tle on to the finger and apply it. It is fairly resistant to saliva and will stay on for a time. You can try it if you wish. Also, I should say that crops of canker sores tend to occur in susceptible people during periods of stress. If you can minimize stress and the things that get you keyed up it might help some. (NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN J has achieved. He still enjoys acting, but he wants to maintain some sense of privacy. To keep this privacy, Man tooth takes long auto and camping trips. Traveling to get away from it all is not a new experience for him. As a youngster, he lived in 46 states because of his father’s job in pipeline construction work. He says he never made many friends until high school when he started act ing. While studying at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, he was spotted by an executive from Universal Studios. Mantooth at first rejected and then accepted a seven year contract. Before being cast in “Emergency," Mantooth ap peared in several television shows including “The Sena tor," “Marcus Welby” and “Adam-12.” Q. Please help settle an argument. When was Hayley Mills born? — L. M., Jeffer son City, Mo. A. She was born April 18, 1946, in London, England. Questions of general inter est will be answered in the column. Volume of mall pro hibits personal replies. In quiries should be sent to Rick Roberts, TV Mailbag, Copley News Service, in care of this newspaper.
