Agriculture employes welcome Carter

WASHINGTON (AP) -
About 800 enthusiastic Agricul
ture Department employes
gave a friendly welcome
Wednesday to their new boss
and to another farmer, Presi
dent Jimmy Carter.
“I’m new here,” the first man
said. “My name is Bob
Bergland. I have an office on
the second floor and I hope that
you’ll come and see me some
time.”
The standing crowd did not
quite fill USDA’s inner patio on
the first floor. Those were em
ployes who were issued tickets
so they could get close to Agri
culture Secretary Bergland and
his guest. Hundreds of others
crowded stairways and bal
conies.
“It’s my pleasure to introduce
my farm adviser, the

gentleman who gives me advice

said.
It was Carter’s turn, and the
ex-peanut farmer from Geor
gia, who has told Bergland not
to mention peanut policy to him,
told the audience that he had
selected “the best person that I
could find,” to be his secretary
of agriculture.
Carter’s opening remarks
were interrupted several times,
but it was later in the question
session that he drew the most
applause. The first query was
about all the paperwork USDA

Walter Cronkite
NEW YORK (AP) — Walter Cronkite has signed a five
year contract to continue as anchorman of the CBS net
work nightly news program. “There was a bit of tug on me
not to sign,” the 60-yearold Cronkite said Wednesday.
“But in the end I did because I feel comfortable here and I
suppose the people must feel fairly comfortable with me.”
The network announced Wednesday that the contract
provides the same schedule as Cronkite’s previous one,
giving him 10 weeks vacation each year. Salary figures
were not disclosed.
Pope Paul VI
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Three Spanish clowns sang
“Granada” and 15 white doves chirped away to tunes
from “My Fair Lady” in a special circus performance put
on for a delighted Pope Paul VI. Members of the Orefei
circus of Italy entertained the 79-year-old pontiff Wed
nesday at the conclusion of his general audience. The
scene-stealer was 11-yearold Ambra Orfei, an accom
plished bird trainer, who said: “To perform in front of the
Pope is so unusual that I’d like my doves to understand
what it means.”
King Khaled
LONDON (AP) — Saudi Arabia’s King Khaled will
spend about a week recuperating from hip surgery at
Wellington Hospital before returning home. The 63-year
old king was making good progress, a spokesman j
reported Wednesday. Saudi national radio has reported
that Crown Prince Fahd, running the country in the king’s
absence, released a number of prisoners from jail in a
gesture of thanks to God for the success of the operation.

Sounds great!” Carter re
plied, and briefly conferred
with Bergland. “Secretary Ber
gland said it sounds like an ex
cellent idea, so I think you’ll see
some changes made about that
very shortly.”
There were more serious mo
ments, particularly when Car
ter outlined conditions he said
had to be met before restoring
normal U.S. relations with An
gola and Cuba, about welfare
reform and taxes.
Carter drew further applause
and cheers with his pledge of
support to agricultural re
search. Many in USDA have felt
for years that basic research on
farm crops, livestock and ways
to produce more food have
taken a back seat to medical,
space and defense projects
without just cause.
Asked if he thought the com
petitiveness of basic agricul
tural research can be improved,
Carter replied, “Certainly,
yes.” He cited “tremendous
benefits” of research in his own
experience of growing peanuts
in Georgia.
Carter said he has rejected

Mrs, Rosalynn Carter
NEW YORK (AP) — First Lady Rosalynn Carter will be
the hostess for singer Marian Anderson’s 75th birthday
gala on Feb. 27 at Carnegie Hall. Young Audiences,
sponsors of the party, said Wednesday it would be Mrs.
Carter’s first appearance at a cultural event outside
Washington since the inauguration. The black contralto,
who integrated the nation’s concert halls and opera
houses with an assist from the late Eleanor Roosevelt, will
share a box at the gala with the latest First Lady.
Henry C, Wynberg
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - Henry C. Wynberg,
onetime frequent escort of actress Elizabeth Taylor, has
pleaded innocent to 10 misdemeanor counts of contrib
uting to the delinquency of a minor. Wynberg, a 42-year
old former used car dealer, and another man are accused
of engaging in sexual acts with four girls, 15 to 17 years

nature” pictures of them. During Wednesday’s brief
arraignment, Municipal Court Judge Andrew Weisz or
dered Wynberg to return to court March 22 for a pretrial
hearing. He is free on SIO,OOO bond.

ference since 1968, has resigned to spend more time
campaigning for the sth District congressional seat.

Nude dancing
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A
county judge says there is noth
ing wrong with nude dancing —
it’s only against the law when
done in a vulgar or lewd fash
ion.
Hillsborough County Judge
Arden Mays Merckle handed
down the ruling Wednesday in a
test case expected to affect
hundreds of similar cases pend
ing in Tampa.
Merckle ruled that alleging a
go-go girl took off her clothing
and danced nude isn’t enough to
charge her under Florida law,
which he said was aimed at
regulating nude performances.
The judge said that a nude
dancer would be in violation
only if she or he engaged in
vulgar conduct, including acts
that simulate sexual activity.
Merckle’s ruling came in the
case of dancer Jean Williams,
who was arrested in November
1976.
In his ruling, the judge noted
that the dance occurred inside a
lounge, hidden from view of
people outside, and that a sign
warned people not to enter if
offended by nudity.
Officials said the judge’s ac
tion could affect as many as 500

similar cases involving a
number of dancers and man
agement personnel who were
arrested for permitting topless
go-go at primarily two bars be
tween September and Febru
ary.
Merckle’s ruling comes a
week after two young women
danced topless at a city-owned
hall before 500 people, many of
them Tampa’s elite, during an
nual Gasparilla festivities. The
women were not arrested.
The city attorney said the
state law didn’t apply in that
case because the occasion was a
private party.
