Wildcats, ’Barna

Second-ranked Kentucky and
No. 8 Alabama collide Saturday
in a regionally televised South
eastern Conference basketball
game that the Crimson Tide
must win to retain any hope of a
third straight NCAA tourna
ment appearance.
Kentucky needs the victory to
stay on the heels of No. 7 Ten
nessee in a torrid SEC title
chase that suddenly became a
two-team affair when the Vols
won at Alabama last Saturday.
With only two weekends re
maining in the season, Ten
nessee has a 14-1 conference
mark, Kentucky 13-1 and Ala
bama 11-3.
Tennessee visits Georgia in
its final road game before re
turning home to close the sea
son with a televised showdown
against Kentucky next Satur
day and a battle with archrival
Vanderbilt the following Mon
day night.
Hawks
eat,
sell
ATLANTA (AP) - The At
lanta Hawks did a little eating
and a little selling Thursday
night before they went on the
court and defeated the New
York Knicks in overtime.
The National Basketball As
sociation team hosted a dinner
party for local businessmen in
an effort to sell season tickets
for the rest of this season and
for next year.
Hawks officials didn’t have an
official count of season tickets
sold, but they seemed pleased at
the turnout of 560 which in
cluded Gov. George Busbee and
Atlanta Mayor Maynard
Jackson.
After mingling with the
crowd, the Hawks went out to
face the Knicks, defeating them
101-98 in overtime.

The schedule favors Ten
nessee at this point since only
Kentucky figures to challenge
the Vols in the remaining
games. Meanwhile, Kentucky
had two straight dangerous foes
this weekend—Alabama Satur
day at 4 p.m. EST and Mis
sissippi State Monday night.
State blew a seven-point lead in
the closing minutes of last
year’s match with the Wildcats
in Lexington.
Other SEC action Saturday
has Louisiana State at Auburn
in an afternoon game, Mis
sissippi at Florida and Mis
sissippi State at Vanderbilt.
“Right now I think Kentucky
has the toughest schedule,”
says Wildcat Coach Joe Hall.
His Wildcats are undefeated
on the road this year, with both
losses in a 21-2 campaign having
come at home in the 23,000-seat
Rupp Arena.
“We will go at these games
(Alabama and State) like they
are on the road,” Hall said.

Intruders
melt ice
ATLANTA (AP) - Roller
skates would have been better
than ice skates for the Atlanta
Flames after four armed in
truders left water running on
their practice area Thursday,
melting it down to bare con
crete.
The intruders broke into the
Omni early Thursday, sur
prised a guard watering the ice
and bound him while they ran
sacked the offices.
An Omni spokesman said the
guard, Harry Wilson, was dis
covered unhurt four hours later.
The intruders refused his pleas
to turn off the hose.
Concerning what previously
appeared to be a showdown
battle with the Crimson Tide,
winners of the last four SEC ti
tles, Hall said, “Alabama is a
solid team capable of beating
anybody.”
Kentucky is seeking its 30th
SEC crown this year and Ten
nessee hopes to nail down its
sixth, having last won in 1972
when the Vols tied Kentucky for
the title.
Chances are good that two of
the three nationally ranked
powers will appear in the NCAA
tournament, but the champion
will have a “home court”
advantage since the NCAA
Mideast action for the SEC
champion will be played at LSU
and Kentucky.
The first round game will be
at LSU on Sunday, March 13,
with a victory advancing a team
to the second round at Rupp
Arena March 17-19. This year’s
NCAA semifinals and finals will
be played at the Omni in Atlanta
March 26-28.

Hawks upsets
Knicks in OT
ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta
Hawks Coach Hubie Brown says
he’s “beginning to see some
light at the end of the tunnel for
next year” after the Hawks
scored a 101-98 overtime victory
over the New York Knicks in
National Basketball Association
play Thursday night.
“It’s getting more and more
difficult for teams to double
team (John) Drew,” Brown
said.
Drew slipped through the
Knicks defense to hit a driving
layup with 27 seconds left to put
the Hawks in the lead for good.
The shot broke a 96-96 tie and
was followed 22 seconds later by
two free throws by Armond Hill.
With two seconds left, the
Knicks cut the lead to two, 100-
98, on a shot by Bob McAdoo,
but a technical foul for delay of
the game turned into a free
throw by Atlanta’s Ken Charles
that cinched the game for the
Hawks.
Knicks Coach Red Holtzman
said Brown “is doing a great job
with the Hawks. They’re a
much better team.
“We moved the ball better
than we have in recent games,
but things just didn’t work out
for us,” he said.
During the game, both teams
built, and lost, big leads. In the
first quarter, the Knicks out
scored the Hawks 13-1 on their
way to a 30-22 edge that turned
into a 46-34 lead in the second
period.
After halftime, Atlanta hit on
14 straight points during a 20-2
streak to build a 68-55 lead.
New York came back to tie
the game 80-80 when Earl Mon
roe hit a layup but the lead
shifted back and forth during
the rest of regulation play and
into the overtime period.

with the mule-loving maverick
owner of the Oakland A’s is
none other than the noted Penn
sylvania horse-fancier Richard
Anthony “Call Me Dick” Allen.
How do you like them apples,
Bowie Kuhn?
The report comes from Fin
ley, who disclosed Thursday
that he expected to reach
agreement “any minute” with
the veteran slugger, who’ll be 35
next month and who was cut
adrift by the Philadelphia
Phillies following another antic
filled 1976 season.
If Allen indeed makes it to
Oakland, the A’s will be the
controversial first baseman’s
fifth major league club, in
cluding two tours with the
Phillies, who had it up to here
with him both times.
Allen was up for grabs in a
special free agent draft last
year and the A’s, clutching at
straws after most of their own
free agent stars fled Finley’s
clutches, were the only ones to
reach out for him.
In 85 games with the Phillies
last season, Allen batted .268
with 15 home runs and 49 runs
batted in, giving him 346
homers and 1,088 RBI in his 13-
year career.
Finley said Allen’s lawyer
told him that “as far as he was
concerned we had a deal, but we
have to wait for Dick to give it
his agreement.” The A’s owner
would not discuss details of the
planned signing, but said it
would not be a long-term con
tract.
With Allen’s checkered his
tory, did anyone think it would
be?
While Allen apparently was
finding a new home just as
spring training was getting un
der way, the Boston Red Sox
were faced with a horse of a
different color.
Bob Woolf, who represents
Luis Tiant, the team’s ace
pitcher, said the 36-year-old

camp today as scheduled and is

March 1. They are infielders
Pete Rose and Dave Concepcion

his mind about retiring.
