County studies
soil ordinance
The Spalding County Board of
Commissioners is studying a
model county and municipal
soil erosion control ordinance.
The county must either write
a similar ordinance or amend
the model for adoption by April
24 or the State will do it for
them.
The model ordinance was
prepared by the state soil and
water committee of Georgia.
The model can be changed to
’meet local needs.
The first step in adopting the
ordinance will be to hold a
public hearing.
Persons interested in county
building and zoning regulations,
and sub-division and building
ordinances as they relate to soil
errosion control (landscaping)
should attend.
County Administrator Louis
Leonard says the meeting
notices will begin running on
Friday.
Shorty Garrison of the
Towaliga Soil Conservation
District met with the
commissioners and said the
ordinance was really needed.
He felt the state model was a
good one but the board perhaps
would want to make a few
minor changes. The changes
were related to requiring
contour maps and minimum
land grading.
In other action the board
agreed to servey Holly Grove
road for future improvements.
Holly Grove road is off Futral
road which has been petitioned
for paving. With sufficient
right-of-way on Holly Grove
road, it could be paved at the
same time as Futral road.
Randy Howell, auditor of
Greenway, Robinson and Smith
told the commissioners the
county could save money by
changing its fiscal year.
The county operates
presently on the calendar year
and Howell proposed an
October through September
year. The county could save
from 5-10 percent by making the
change.
Commissioner Frank Thomas
said he was concerned about the
people and the impact it would
have on them.
The commissioners took the
change under advisement.
Yatesville
man injured
A Yatesville man was injured
this morning when his motor

Langley, 41, of Route 1, Box 79-
A, a possible
broken leg. He was admitted to
the Griffin hospital.
Officers said he was traveling
north on the By-Pass when his
motorcycle collided with a car
driven by Dorothy Nell Nelson
of 1208 Carver road. She was
crossing the 4-lane on
Kalamazoo, police said.
