Eating causes cramps
DEAR DR. LAMB - Three
years ago I was tested for lac
tose intolerance. I can only
absorb one per cent of lactose.
They told me to cut out all
milk and milk products.
Now there are other things
that are giving me the same
symptoms as the lactose.
Some of these things are all
fruits except bananas,
pretzels, potato chips, onions,
sauerkraut, certain donuts
and cakes, ricotta cheese but
not mozzarella cheese, sour
cream, some chocolates,
orange juice and grape juice.
I was using Pepto-Bismol to
stop the diarrhea and cram
ping but it stopped helping.
The doctor gave me Lomotil
and it works pretty well.
Could you please tell me
why these and other things are
bothering me now? Is there
any way to get over this
problem or help me?
DEAR READER - Inabili
ty to split the double milk
sugar, lactose, is sometimes
just part of the clinical pic
ture of another problem, in
cluding an infection with
amoeba and another organism
called giardia. Infestation
with either of these parasites
is sometimes difficult to
diagnose. Both can be picked
up in more tropical areas but
do occur almost anyplace
these days.
Inflammation of the
digestive tract from any
cause can lead to poor produc
tion of enzymes from the in
testinal wall cells that nor
mally help you digest your
food. Intolerance to milk may
be temporary after infectious
diarrhea or even after sur
gery, for example gall bladder
surgery. Then you may also
have food allergies.
High on the list of allergies
is an allergy to gluten, a pro
tein from wheat. You can get
flour with the gluten protein in
it from surprising sources, in
cluding cream soups, ice
cream, hot dogs and lunch
meats.
Ask Dick Kleiner
~<•** TV wrestling
really fake
By Dick Kleiner
DEAR DICK: Would you please give me some information
about wrestling on TV? Is it a big fake or is it for real? My
Daddy has had two strokes and gets all excited every time it
comes on. I have tried to tell him that it is a big act, but he
won’t believe me. JOHNNY CATES, Burlington, N.C.
Tell Daddy for me that it’s an act. Professional wrestlers
are fantastic athletes, but they don’t mean a bit of it. It’s all
rehearsed, planned, plotted, worked out in advance.
DEAR DICK: I saw a recent episode of Charlie’s Angels
which reminded me of an episode of Mod Squad I had seen
some time ago. The shows had the same producers. What
happened? YOLETTE BECKFORD, Tucson, Ariz.
Television plots and scripts are interchangeable, and that’s
one of the things wrong with TV. Many writers and producers
use old scripts, merely changing a few details and, presto,
they have new scripts. The same script, or at least the same
basic plot, can be used for Kojak and Starsky and Hutch,
merely by changing a few names and a few details. It happens
all the time.
DEAR DICK: Would you please settle a debate between my
husband and me? I say Esther Williams is married to Ricardo
Montalban and he says Fernando Lamas. A READER, South
Jersey, N.J.
I keep telling you ladies to listen to your husbands. It’s
Lamas. Ricardo’s wife is a lovely lady named Georgeanne.
DEAR DICK: Was Freddie Prinze a brother of Tony Orlan
do or not? I’ve read both. E.C., Ottumwa, lowa
They were just lookalikes, not relations.
DEAR DICK: Will you please tell me whether the group on
Gilligan’s Island was ever rescued? CARL WILLIAMSON,
Mobile, Ala.
No, it was just the audience that was rescued when the show
got cancelled. There was never a final episode on that show, so
they’re all still trapped on the island.
DEAR DICK: Would you please settle a bet for me? Are
Bradford Dillman and Bruce Dern in any way related? A. I.
RICHARDSON, Austin, Minn.
No.
DEAR DICK: Can you please tell me why the Merv Griffin
Show was taken off the air and is there any chance that it will
return? FLORENCE CRAIN, Troy, Ohio.
It wasn’t, at least not nationally. Merv is still plugging
along. It must have been your local station that dropped it, so
take the matter up with them. If enough people complain,
they’ll put it back on.
There is no way I can tell
you which of these many
problems you have but you
can try a test on yourself. Get
your pharmacist to help you
get some pure dextrose
(glucose) that you can use for
sugar. Then eliminate all
other sweets, all milk and
milk products, all cereals,
fruit and eat only the meat
group and use dextrose
flavored with a little lemon
juice to provide you with
about 50 grams of glucose a
day.
This strict diet is simply to
find out if your problem is just
diet related. It is not a balanc
ed diet and you can’t stay on it
without vitamin and mineral
supplements. If your symp
toms go away, then you can
start tracking down which of
the many things you eat cause
the problem. Add only one
thing at a time. Os course,
your doctor may want to test
again for intestinal parasites
and that may help solve the
problem. Do not use coffee
(not even the decaffeinated
variety), tea, chocolate, colas
or soda drinks or alcohol.
If you have no symptoms on
that diet then you can try ad
ding other things. You can get
Lact-Aid and use enough to
convert nearly all the milk
sugar to single sugars. That
will enable you to use milk
even if you do have lactose in
tolerance. You can get Lact-
Aid from Sugarlo Company,
3540 Atlantic Avenue, Atlantic
City, NJ 08404.
If all goes well then you can
add ordinary sugar, then rice
flour and other substances
that do not contain any wheat
flour and possible gluten
sources. I am sending you The
Health Letter number 7-2,
Milk Products: Good and Bad.
Others who want this informa
tion can send 50 cents for it
with a long, stamped, self
addressed envelope for mail
ing. Write to me in care of this
newspaper, P.O. Box 1551,
Radio City Station, New York,
NY 10019.
