City commission meeting
Post Office drive
exit requested
The Board of Griffin City
Commissioners has requested
that the U.S. Post Office install
an exit driveway from the Post
Office parking lot onto West
Solomon street.
The letter was sent to
Postmaster Jim Chappell and
stated the additional exit would
relieve traffic congestion at the
intersection of Eighth and
Solomon streets.
A copy also was sent to U.S.
Congressman Jack Flynt.
According to City Manager
Roy Inman, the city is not
willing to share in the costs and
hopes they will be paid with
federal funds.
Paving
scheduled
The DOT will resurface
portions of 10th and Solomon
streets, according to
Commissioner Louis Goldstein,
who said he has talked with a
state official about the matter.
The work includes Solomon
near the railroad crossing; 10th
from Poplar to Solomon and a
portion of Poplar, he said.
Traffic light
on the way
The traffic light at Airport
and Zebulon roads at Spalding
Square should be up in a couple
of months.
Mr. Inman said the materials
for it will be delivered in late
May, according to a
Department of Transportation
spokesman.
Soil erosion
ordinance
The commissioners will hear
about a proposed ordiance on
soil erosion and sediment
control at their next week’s
meeting. It is being prepared by
City Engineer Jimmy Johnson.
A state law on the subject will
go into effect April 24 and if
Griffin wants local control, it
must enact its own law before
then, Mr. Inman explained.
The Tuesday morning
administrative sessions will
begin at 8 a.m. from now on.
Commissioner Mullins asked
that the time be changed from
9:30 and that more business be
conducted during the Tuesday
night meetings.
Goldstein
elected
Commissioner Goldstein has
been elected to continue to
serve on the Elections
Committee of the Municipal
Electric Association of Georgia.
The committee has 47
members, representing each
MEAG city, and will meet June
28 to elect 3 members of the
board of govemers. One of the
positions presently is held by
Charlie Smith, former head of
the city electric department.
City workers who go to
peoples’ homes may be
required to wear some sort of
identification.
Commissioner Goldstein
suggested that with the rash of
daylight burglaries and thefts,
the city workers wear
something to identify them,
such as a cap or an armband.
