HOUSTON, Tex.-After an
uproar that began when Nikki
Van Hightower was criticized
for backing abortion and the
Equal Rights Amendment, The
City Council has voted to
abolish her job as Houston’s
official women’s advocate. The
mayor of Houston has decided
to fight the city councils
decision. (AP)

donate
$2,000
Bob Undstrom, director of
Rock Eagle Center, came to
Griffin Wednesday to make a
civic club talk. He left with a
package of Griffin made towels
and checks for $4,000.
The money will be used to
renovate the Spalding County
Cabin at the state complex.
Lindstrom accepted a $2,000
check from the Griffin Kiwanis
Club where he was the speaker,
a check from the Kiwaniannes
for SI,OOO, a check from the
Griffin Rotary Club for SSOO and
a check from the Spalding 4-H
Council for SSOO.
Lindstrom told the club of a
massive building repair
program.
Jack Smith, Spalding 4-H
agent, who introduced the
speaker, said the donations
should cover the expense of
repairing the Spalding building.

Funny money
GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP)
— This city is about 100 miles
from the Canadian border, so
employes at a shopping center
and a supermarket didn’t think
much of it when two men said
they would have to pay in Ca
nadian currency — from "east
ern Canada.”
Police say one man went into
the shopping center last week
end, picked up a pack of ciga
rettes and handed the clerk a
“$25 bill.” The store clerk,
Pauline Lorang, said she used
the normal discount rate for
Canadian currency and gave
$23.25 in change.
“It had the funny color of Ca
nadian money,” she said.
Another man later did the
same thing in the supermarket,
this time handing the clerk a
“SSO bill,” police said. The clerk
gave the man change of $46.53
and his pack of cigarettes.
But there was a problem. Po
lice say the currency had cyril
lic printing — the kind used in
Russia and east Europe, not
east Canada.
