Telephone interview
Sen. Nunn comments on issues
BY QUIMBY MELTON
Editor of Fayette County News
Senator Sam Nunn sees bright
hope for the future in America.
In a phone conference
interview with the Griffin Daily
News, Nunn answered
questions on such topics as
relations with Cuba and
Vietnam, the concept of the
feasibility of a volunteer army
and his bid for reelection in
1978.
Nunn spoke to the Griffin
News in the phone conference
along with four other Georgia
newspapers.
City employes
complete
course
Four employes of the City of
Griffin have completed a course
offered by the Georgia Water
and Wastewater Institute at
West Georgia College.
Albert W. Stowell, John W.
Griffiths, Jr., and Haskell H.
Hill, all of Griffin, took part in
the one-week session of the
activated sludge workshop.
Leon S. Eller, of Griffin, took
part in the one-week session on
water distribution.
The institute is a cooperative
training effort of the
Environmental Protection
Division of the State
Department of Natural
Resources and the Board of
Regents through West Georgia.
The training sessions are
geared toward preparing
participants for required state
certification examinations and
upgrading the efficiency of
water and wastewater
treatment plant operators.
Answering questions on the
concept of the volunteer army,
Nunn said he did not see the
need to reinstitute the draft
system the U.S. had during the
Vietnam War.
“I would like to see a national
debate on the issue very soon,”
noted the junior senator from
Georgia.
Nunn also said that he
favored a plan of registration
but would have to consider the
alternatives if feasible.
Relations With Cuba-Vietnam
Nunn said he considered Cuba
and Vietnam two seperate
govememnts and two seperate
situations.
Nunn noted he would not
consider any relations with
Cuba until they withdraw forces
from Angola and their aid to
Zaire.
“There should be no moves to
ease trade restrictions with the
Cubans until they display a
relaxed attitude toward the
African nations.”
Nunn commented on Vietnam
by saying, “We don’t owe
Vietnam anything in terms of
war payments.”
The Senator added that
Americans suffered as much as
the Vietnamese during the
course of the war.
A bright note of cooperation
with the Missing In Action
American men problem from
the Vietnam government did
give Nunn hope of getting back
together with the relations.
“If this type of cooperation
continued, we would consider
relations.”
Nunn emphasized that in no
way would he approve of their
types of government. He noted
that relations would be as the
U.S. had them with the
Russians and Chinese.
Fort Gordon
Nunn is looking into the
civilian employment situation
at Fort Gordon. He is presently
trying to tie the Army down and
get certain cost estimates.
He said that he was presently
asking the Secretary of the
Army a number of questions.
Marijuana
Nunn believes that on a
federal level marijuana
possession should be
emphasized less. He does
believe that the selling of this
and other drugs, should have
stronger penalties.
He does not favor de
criminalization of the drug now.
“We must go after the hard
drugs,” he said.
Election Reform
In the interview, Nunn stated
that the elpctorial college did
need some type of reform.
He does not favor a direct
election method of choosing a
president, as Jimmy Carter is
urging.
Nunn favors some type of
proportion of the votes. “If we
have a direct election method
for the campaign, you would
only see the candidates in the
more populated states,
soliciting votes,” he said.
He also said congressional
election funding for members
of Congress would turn into a
bureaucratic mess.
“I have grave doubts about
this,” he said.

Judicial Reform
Nunn believes that judicial
reform is needed.
“The process needs to be
speeded up,” he said. Sen.
Nunn also added that the
country needed swift and
certain punishment for crime.
“This will act as a deterant.”
Chiefs and Indians
At the present time, Nunn
and the Armed Services
Committee is looking into the
overload of top ranking military
personnel.
He said there was a good bit of
hope that the overload would be
reduced.
The fact that there were too
many Chiefs and not enough
Indians in the military would be
considered.
“We have got to get the signal
out that everyone is in the
military does not need have to
be a general. The military is a
good career.”
He said that they would also
be looking into the fact that the
civil service branches could use
a little trimming.
Reelection—l97B
Nunn added that he planned
to seek reelection.
“I have no plans for a
volunteer retirement as yet
from the Senate seat.”
Senator Nunn will be a
candidate in 1978.
