Inmate wounded
ATLANTA (AP) — A man was wounded as he and two
other prisoners tried to escape Wednesday from the
Georgia Industrial Institute at Alto, a Department of

She said John Bettie was taken to a nearby hospital with
a wrist wound and was listed in good condition.
The three, who were climbing over a security fence,
failed to halt and were fired at by corrections officers, she
said.
The escape by Bettie, David Harralson and Terry
Simmons lasted about 10 minutes before they were
recaptured, she said.
Ages, home towns and length of sentences were not
immediately available.

Agent Don Cochran said Ronnie Stewart had not been

bond, Cochran said.
All three are from Dalton.
The bank was robbed of $1,900 just after noon Tuesday,
the Paulding County Sheriff’s Department said.
Roy Jones, supervisor of detectives, said a sawed-off
shotgun and a .38-caliber pistol were seized from the
automobile in which Roach and Miss Jackson were
captured.

White House Egg Roll
Plastic eggs out, real ones in
WASHINGTON (AP) - Plas
tic eggs are out this year. Real
eggs are in.
Youngsters participating in
the last two Easter egg rolls
outside the White House have
had to make do with a plastic
product.
That upset the egg industry,
and this year the Georgia Egg
Commission is donating four
dozen real eggs for the event,
the first since ex-Georgia Gov.
Jimmy Carter moved into the
White House.
Children have been rolling
eggs around the White House
lawn once a year since the ad
ministration of Rutherford B.
Hayes.
Equipped with a spoon to fa
cilitate rolling, they push their
eggs around a prescribed
course.
But sometimes, the eggs don’t
cooperate, and the White House
grounds crew is left with a
squishy mess to clean up.
That’s how the plastic eggs
entered the roll, two years ago.
James Fleming, vice presi
dent of an egg marketing co-op,
said Wednesday egg producers
were very upset “when this

Sinking cities
CHICAGO (AP) - What do
Birmingham, Ala., Houston,
Tex., and Baton Rouge, La.,
have in common? They’re sink
ing, because more water is
being taken from the ground
than nature can replenish, ac
cording to water treatment en
gineers at Ecodyne Corp.
This phenomenon, called
“subsidence,” has caused the
ground level in the Houston-
Galveston area to drop an aver
age of five feet since 1918.
Baton Rouge will fall five feet
by 1990.
