HEALTH
Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
Burt Reynolds’ diet flap
DEAR DR. LAMB - I read
in the paper that Burt
Reynolds lost 30 pounds in just
three weeks. He had a half
grapefruit, unsweetened, for
breakfast with a cup of black
coffee. For lunch he had a
single scoop of cottage cheese
and a peeled fresh peach. He
skipped dinner every other
day. When he did have dinner
it was limited to six ounces of
steak, or six ounces of ground
beef or 12 to 16 ounces of fish.
With this he had a salad with
no salad dressing.
When he felt like he was go
ing to give in to his hunger he
jogged around the block.
Do you approve of this diet?
Is it really possible to lose 30
pounds in three weeks that
way? If you think it is OK I’d
like to try it.
DEAR READER - I am
afraid Burt Reynolds knows
more about movies than he
does about dieting.
Let’s examine what Burt
really did. If he lost a pound of
fat a day for three weeks that
would be 21 pounds. He would
have to use 3500 calories a day
more than he took in. Even on
total starvation that would be
impossible unless he was do
ing lots of strenuous physical
activity every day. It is more
likely that he used closer to
2500 or 2800 calories a day
while he was on his diet. That
is not equal to the calories in a
pound of fat.
When anyone starts on a bad
diet like that one which
markedly decreases the food
intake the first week there
will be a loss of normal body
water — your body weight is
half water — and the digestive
system will empty out. You
can lose between five and 10
pounds of weight (water, not
fat) that way. That accounts
for part of his weight loss.

POLLY'S POINTERS

Try steel wool
on epoxy spot
By Polly Cramer
Dear Polly — I spilled some clear epoxy glue on my
non-stainless wood table so please tell me how to
remove it without damaging the table.
Also, did you know that bath soap will last longer if
you unwrap the bar and let it set for a few weeks before
using it? - JUDY W.
DEAR JUDY — Some problems have no satisfactory
answers and I am afraid yours is one of them as far as I
can learn. Epoxy glue is made to stick and it really does.
My only suggestion would be to rub the glue with fine,
fine steel wool that has been dipped in liquid wax and
perhaps you could remove the dab of glue so it is at least
the same level as the rest of the table top. This would
have to be done very carefully so as not to mar the sur
face around the spot. It will leave it with a mark but
perhaps being even with the table top will make it less
conspicuous. If some reader has had a similar mishap
and found a solution do let us know. — POLLY.
DEAR POLLY — Mrs. J. C. wrote asking how she could
whiten a white nylon baby dress that is embroidered with real
silk. Anyone fortunate enough to own a deep freeze can white
nylons. First wash and rinse and, after the water has been
pressed out with the hands, place loosely in a plastic bag and
freeze. Leave in the freezer several days. — MRS. T.C.
DEAR POLLY — I have a very frustrating problem. We
recently moved into an old house with an old-fashioned
bathtub and sink that have been so badly neglected that the
shiny protective coating is worn off. I have tried everything I
know to make them clean and shiny looking but they stay dull
and dingy looking. I have always prided myself on a clean
shiny bathroom and am determined to keep this one that way.
I do hope someone has a suggestion for me.
I do so enjoy the Pointers and find a use for one of them
every day. — THERESA.
DEAR THERESA — If this is a surface dinginess you might
try sprinkling baking soda on a moist sponge, scrub, rinse and
dry.
There is a white epoxy paint that I have known some people
to use to restore the white shininess to bathroom fixtures but
have heard more criticism than praise for it. Should you
decide to try it, the directions must be followed explicitly and
it will put the bathroom out of use for several days. A plum
bing fixture dealer I spoke with was not at all enthusiastic
about this product but I did see a kitchen counter where it had
worked well. Discuss the matter with your paint dealer before
going ahead. I was told that fixtures such as yours can be
removed to be reglazed and refinished. — POLLY.
On the days without dinner
he must have eaten less than
250 calories. On the days with
dinner he ate 1000 to 1200
calories. So he must have had
an average daily calorie in
take of 675 calories. That
would mean he must not have
had a daily calorie deficit of
more than 2200 calories —
equivalent to only two-thirds
of a pound of body fat a day.
That is only 14 pounds of body
fat in three weeks — not 30.
Weight in pounds and fat
lost are not the same thing.
The rest of Burt’s weight loss
then must have been water
and food waste in the
digestive system — but that
was most likely only seven
pounds at the most making a
total of 21 pounds. What was
the other nine pounds? Burt’s
muscles. He lost part of that
manly torso as well as
blubber. A pound of lean
muscles contains only about
600 calories, so he lost both
protein and fat. That is not
good for you. He can gain it
back with exercise but he is
kidding himself if he thinks he
lost 30 pounds of fat. The
pounds of water loss and food
waste loss will return as soon
as he gets back to healthy
eating habits.
The proper way to diet and
protect your muscles and your
health is to use a well
balanced diet plan that will
help you eat wisely from then
on. For that purpose I am sen
ding you The Health Letter
number 4-7, Weight Losing
Diet. Others who want this
safe plan to lose weight safely
