‘Extremely unlikely’ Trudeaus will part
OTTAWA, Canada (AP) — A
television station’s report that
Prime Minister Pierre Elliott
Trudeau and his wife, Marga
ret, have agreed to separate is
"extremely unlikely,” a
spokesman for Trudeau’s office
said early today.
The prime minister’s spokes
man said if the report by To
ronto station CFTO were true,
‘‘l’m sure I would know, and I
don't know.” He added that he
was certain the office would
have been advised if a separa-

A Toronto television station reported Wednesday night
that Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau and
his wife, Margaret, have agreed to separate. The bulletin
report by station CFTO gave no details and the Prime
Minister's office has denied the report. The couple is
shown here in late February of this year, returning to
Ottawa from a state visit in Washington. (AP)
Trudeau is 57, his wife is 28,
and they have been married six
years. They have three sons
aged 5 and 3 years and 18
months.
There has been speculation
that they were breaking up
since she went to Toronto alone
on their sixth wedding anni
versary early this month, spent
the weekend listening to the
Rolling Stones rock group and
then went to New York while
Stones leader Mick Jagger and
another member of the group
were there.
Mrs. Trudeau denied she was
having an affair with Jagger
and insisted there were no
problems with her marriage.
Trudeau also denied that the
marriage was in trouble but
said his wife was canceling
some public engagements to
have more privacy.
Mrs. Trudeau said she was in
New York to study photography
and led a busy social life while
there. She returned to Ottawa
on March 12 and denied reports
that she said she would live in
Manhattan and commute to Ot
tawa. But she said she was go
ing into photography seriously
and would work occasionally in
New York and “around the
world.”
Mrs. Trudeau underwent
treatment for emotional stress
at a Montreal hospital in Sep
tember, 1974, and said later she
needed to be away from house
hold strains. She said then she
longed for the day “when I will
no longer be the prime minis
ter’s wife, when I can just be
Pierre’s wife.”
Fort Valley
asks court
for ruling
FORT VALLEY, Ga. (AP) —
Some Fort Valley residents
have asked the U.S. Supreme
Court to overturn a federal
court ruling that Peach County
need not hold a special election
for seats on the county board of
commissioners.
A three-judge panel of the
U.S. District Court in Macon
ruled Feb. 28 that the commis
sion failed to comply with regu
lations of the Voting Rights Act
of 1965 when it changed election
procedures nine years ago.
But the judges termed the
violation “a technicality” and
said it did not warrant a new
election.
The suit, filed by Dr. H. W.
Berry of Fort Valley and other
residents, charges that current
county election procedures pre
vent blacks from winning elec
tion to the board of commis
sioners.
