Snider Judge Probate Court Spalding County, Georgia Page 11 — Griffin Daily News Friday, April 1,1977 Showbeat ‘Snow Bird’ girl makes return By Dick Kleiner HOLLYWOOD - (NEA) - In the music business, it’s generally a case of out of sight, out of mind tra-la. Anne Murray has been out of sight for about eight months, and she’s back now, trying to re-establish herself as one of the premiere girl singers of the ’7os. The girl who rode the “Snow Bird’s” tail to fame and fortune is once again singing and singing as well as ever. She was off for those eight months — she calls it “my sabbatical” — to attend to some maternal duties. She had a baby, and William Stewart is now six months old. “During those eight months,” she says, “I didn’t even think about music. I didn’t listen to the radio. I didn’t read the music trade papers. I have no ideas about what songs are popular or what singers are hot.” She just spent those months in Toronto, having her baby and seeing him through his first few months of adjusting to being alive. Even though she’s resuming her career, she’s not resum ing it with the same intensity she once conducted it. She says that, from now on, her activities will be limited. “I’m going to curtail things from now on,” she says. “I’m not as ambitious as I used to be. I’ll still make records and play a few hotel rooms — Dallas, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas. Maybe I’ll play a few county fairs during the summer. But I won’t do any more one-nighters.” She says that, before she IT w Firelady? She says her big problem was that she couldn’t say no to offers, but now she has learn ed how. She admits there is always the danger that, when she is once again re-established, the offers will again flock in and she’ll be faced with the temp tation to say yes. She thinks she’ll be able to resist that temptation. She wants to; she says she only wants to be a part-time singer from now on. “I realize that if I get another big hit record,” she says, “the demands and offers and temptations will once more come my way. “That’s why I almost hope I don’t have a big hit record. I know it’s awful to say that, but it’s true. I want to pursue my career within limits — recording, TV, a few hotels. I enjoy recording and I enjoy TV, but I don’t particularly enjoy personal appearances. I do it because the money is good and that’s important.” She and her husband, Bill Stewart, a free-lance TV director and producer, still live in Toronto. And that’s where they plan to stay. “I like it there,” she says, “and I don’t particularly like it here. Living in Hollywood is like living in the middle of Photoplay Magazine.” So she only ventures out of Toronto when she has to, for professional reasons. Otherwise, she prefers the life there — she is an outdoors girl, golfing, swimming, play ing tennis, when the weather permits. Her first engagement, after she returned to action, was at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas. She says it was difficult get ting back in the singing saddle again. “It’s amazing how much you forget,” she says, “but it’s like swimming — after a few days, it all comes back to you again. At first, in Dallas, I was very frightened, but I got over that quickly.” It’s nice to have her back.
