Griffin golfers
defeat Jackson
Steve Wallace put the body
English on a 15-foot putt on the
last hole at the Griffin Country
Club Thursday to give Griffin
High a one-stroke win over
Jackson.
Dee Hunter posted a 45 for
Griffin. Bubba Mabbett, Jere
Moore and John Garrison all
had 45s for Griffin.
Tournament officials took the
best four scores to make up
Griffin’s 174. Jackson compiled
a 175 team total.

defeated the Heritage tennis
team Thursday by a score of 6-3.
After splitting the singles 3-3,
Griffin swept the doubles, 3-0.
Ann Walker and Connie
Westmoreland captured the
number 1 doubles, 6-5. Cynthia
Jones and Julie Ward won 8-6
and Deborah Calloway and
Tammy Parks won, 8-4.
Connie Westmoreland
dropped the number 1 singles to
Amy Rose, 1-8.
Ann Walker defeated Linda
Ogletree 8-5 in the number 2
singles.
Julie Ward dropped the
number 3 singles to Rosemary
Smith 3-8.

er County High School star
Charles Carter has signed a
grant-in-aid to attend the Uni
versity of Georgia, basketball
Coach John Guthrie announced.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard
was a four-year starter at
Wheeler County, scoring 2,575
points.

Women of Moose
bowlers bit jackpot
Griffin Women of the Moose
hit the jackpot in the Georgia
Moose State Association
bowling tournament at Triangle
Lanes, East Point, as they
walked off with a pair of
championships.
Bonnie Taylor was the
individual star as she took the
singles handicap crown with a
715. The Griffin lass, who sports
but a low 120 average, turned in
the best performance of her
career.
Bonnie opened her series with
a 212 and followed with a 213. It
marked the first time she had
ever put 200 hundred games
back to back. The excitement,
however, took its toll in the
nightcap as she shot a 146 for a
571 net. She received a 144-pin
handicap to amass her amazing
total.
The Clowns proved anything
but their name in the team
event as they paced the field
with a 2,458 handicap total.
Each member of the foursome
shot over her average to give
Griffin its first team crown in
the history of the tournament.
Captain Barbara Stinson
turned in the top net
performance as she rolled 179-
171-170 for a 520 net and aided by
an 81-pin spot had a 601 gross.
Ann Palmer topped the team
in gross with games of 166-154-
184 for a 504 plus 120 for a 624.
Lila Williams pinned 166-135-168
plus 150 for a 619 and Laura
Doster tallied 156-161-171-126-
614.
Liz Sherliza took 10th place in
the singles with a 641 gross
while Mrs. Doster had a 631 for
11th; Mrs. Palmer 623 for 12th
and Gail Bush 622 for 15th.
Doster and Palmer were the
only Griffinites to finish in the
money in the doubles with 1,206,
which was good for fifth place.
Two Griffin quintets finished
in the money in the men’s
division. Speir’s Insurance took
third with 3,082 and the Trans
Plants finished seventh with
2,987.
Larry Lawrence and Curt
Presley captured second in the
doubles with 1,247. Harold
Hasler and Jim Friedlander
were fifth with 1,233 followed by
Dan Taylor and John
McNamee, 1,231 Jim Skrine and
Jimmy Wilborn finished ninth
with 1,217, nosing out Julian
Cook and Wilson Bevil by a pin.
Stinson
bowls 551
Barbara Stinson rolled a 212
game and a 551 series yesterday
in the Thursday Morning Ladies
League. Chris Hudgins had a
215 and a 548 and Pat McGuire
turned in a 190 and a 523.

The Alleyoops . beat the
Hopefuls 4-0, the Headpins

Spirit of ’76 3-1, the Sleepyheads
beat the Smilies 3-1, the Upsets
beat the Hotshots 3-1 and the
Pinbusters defeated the Streaks
3-1.

tournament at Indianapolis,
Ind., on Apr. 16-17.

next week
The Griffin Babe Ruth
League will hold tryouts next
week at City Park.
Tryouts for 13-year-olds will
be Monday and Tuesday
beginning at 5:45.
Tryouts for 14 and 15-year
olds are scheduled for
Wednesday and Thursday at
5:45.
Boys will be allowed to sign
up for the Babe Ruth League
program at the tryouts. Anyone
interested in participating in
the circuit are urged to attend
the tryouts and register.
Sign-ups will end following
the tryouts.
