509 West Taylor Street
tial sedan entered the White
House grounds, an alarm sys
tem signaled the presence of an
intruder in a wooded area some
100 yards away.
Within minutes, uniformed
White House police had seized a
26-year-old woman who some
how had managed to scale the
eight-foot-high wrought iron
fence that surrounds the prop
erty.
Delores I. Bauer, of Bak
ersfield, Calif., told officers she
wanted to see the President, a
Secret Service spokesman said.
The woman, who was
unarmed, was arrested and
charged with unlawful entry.
The Carters, who did not see
the intruder, showed no dis
position to hustle inside the
house because of the incident.
In fact, they paused momentar
ily to look out across the south
lawn, which faces the Was
hington Monument, to watch
police launch the search.
The Carters had attended a
National Theater performance
of Eugene O’Neill’s play “Anna
Christie” starring Liv Ullmann.
It was their second cultural
outing of the week. On Monday
night the Carters attended a
Washington National Symphony
concert at the John F. Kennedy
center conducted by Mstislav
Rostropovich.
After watching “Anna Christ
ie,” the Carters greeted Ms.
Ullmann and other members of
the cast on stage behind the
closed curtain.
After offering con
gratulations, Carter said he
looked forward to seeing Ms.
Ullmann at the White House
today. She obviously was plan
ning to pay a visit but seemed
surprised that Carter intended
to see her. She was not on his
announced schedule.
‘Outhouse’
fire baffles
firemen
LITHONIA, Ga. (AP) - The
DeKalb County fire department
says it is baffled by a fire which
destroyed a 30-year-old
outhouse.
The little red outhouse which
sat in Charles Wilson’s back
yard burned down several days
ago, and Lt. Joe Foster says
he’s stumped.
“I don’t know how in the
world the thing got started,” he
said.
But once it began, Mrs. Wil
son said, it was not to be ex
tinguished. “We were fighting
it” with a garden hose, she said,
but “it burnt to the ground."
Foster said after sifting
through the remains of the out
house, he ruled out an electrical
cause, since the Wilson
outhouse, like most similar
structures, is not wire for elec
tricity.
But said some fertilizer which
was stored in the outhouse
might be responsible for the
blaze.
Water might have seeped into
the fertilizer, causing it to gen
erate enough heat to ignite the
outhouse, Foster said.
Blitz’
sniffer
too good
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -
Having a wonder dog to sniff out
illegal drugs can bring its
headaches as well as its joys,
Chatham County District Atty.
Andrew J. Ryan 111 has found.
Ryan says his office is too
busy to prosecute 47 drug pos
session cases stemming from
the activities of Blitz, the coun
ty’s pot-sniffing German Shep
ard.
He said Thursday that he has
asked'U.S. Attorney Jackson B.
Smith Jr. of Augusta to help his
department prosecute persons
caught with illegal drugs
aboard Amtrak trains heading
through Savannah.
Ryan said that since Blitz
sniffed out the drugs aboard a
federal conveyance traveling
interstate, the feds ought to
handle the prosecutions.

No April’s Fool joke
Tag deadline has passed
ATLANTA (AP) - Many
Georgia residents may think of
themselves as April fools today
as they stand in line on the last
day for buying automobile li
cense tags in Georgia.
Tag offices around the state
reported delays ranging from 30
minutes to two hours Thursday
for motorists lining up to buy
the tags.
An estimated 10 to 15 per cent
of the motorists in Clarke
County had not purchased new
tags by Thursday afternoon, of
ficials there estimated.
In Fulton County, tag sales
through Thursday were about
16,000 fewer than for the same
period last year, a spokesman
said.
The deadline for buying the
tags officially comes at 12:01
a.m. on Saturday, but for
motorists attempting to buy
tags in person, the deadline will
fall whenever the local office
closes today.
The penalty for buying a late
tag is 10 per cent of the ad
valorem tax levied on the
automobile, plus 25 per cent of
the charge for the tag, plus sl.
Georgia motorists must pay
ad valorem taxes on their
automobiles at the time they
purchase their license tags.
There’s another penalty for
driving around without a cur
rent tag — drivers in that situ
ation could be charged with a
misdemeanor bringing a fine of
‘Abduction’
puzzles
sheriff
ASHBURN, Ga. (AP) -
Turner County Sheriff Lamar
Whiddon said he was “at ropes
end” Thursday night in the
search for Candy Renee Town,
20, who allegedly was abducted
while she and a friend were
hitchhiking.
The friend, C. W. Depper, told
police a man who had picked
them up drove off with Miss
Town after Depper got out of the
automobile to check a tire.
Police said Depper and Miss
Town, both of Atlanta, were
hitchhiking home from Florida
on Wednesday when they were
picked up in Tifton by an
unidentified man.
Depper said the man told the
couple he would take them as
far as Macon, but turned east
onto Georgia 32 in Turner
County, saying he had friends to
visit.
Whiddon said Depper told po
lice that the man stopped the
car in Irwinville and asked
Depper to get out and check for
a flat tire, then drove away.
The sheriff said neither the
man nor Miss Town have been
seen or heard from since the
Wednesday morning incident.
“We’re just looking and wait
ing,” he said.
Depper was picked up by a
sheriff’s patrol car and stayed
at the jail until early Thursday
when he left to hitchhike to At
lanta, deputies said.
Officers said the man who
picked up the hitchhikers was
driving a brown, 1965 Pontiac
Bonneville with a Georgia li
cense tag.
Whiddon described Miss
Town as being medium height,
weighing about 120 pounds, with
brown eyes and black hair.
around S2O to $25, depending on
the judge.
But state patrol Capt. W. F.
Richardson said troopers are
instructed to be careful about
writing such charges in order to
“give everyone the benefit of
the doubt.”
Many counties allow motor
