ML 4" . HEALTH Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D. Gout treatment update DEAR DR. LAMB - I have a foot problem, down by the side of my big toe that has been diagnosed as gout. Please give me a remedy, diet or what-have-you, for this con dition. It is very painful and I feel like I really need some relief. Are there foods that I should not eat? DEAR READER — Gout is caused by an excess produc tion of uric acid by your own cells. Because older concepts of the disease persist many people do not understand why the treatment has changed. The old idea that a gouty in dividual ate rich foods, drank wine and was obese is not true. The diet is important but it is less important than good medical treatment and regular follow-ups by your doctor. The basic misconception is that the gout comes from what you eat. If it did I suspect that most of our pop ulation would have gout from eating too much and eating the wrong foods. Uric acid is a byproduct of the formation of nucleic acids in the nuclei of the body cells. Since your cells are constant ly regenerating and new cells are replacing old ones the for mation of nucleic acids is a constant process. The medicines you need are those that prevent your cells from producing too much uric acid. That is the newest and in many cases the most effective treatment. The other methods of treatment include medicines that increase the elimination of excess uric acid by the kidneys (but if you have suppressed uric acid for mation in the first place this may not be necessary) and medicines to relieve that severe pain of acute attacks such as you have now. The treatment of the acute attack is different from the long term pervention of future at tacks and gouty arthritis. Ask Dick Kleiner Mechanical Kong didn’t make it By Dick Kleiner DEAR DICK: I heard on the radio that the 40-foot “King Kong” mechancial monster played in only 25 seconds in the movie and the actor who played in 99 per cent of the film wasn’t credited at all. Was the monster a publicity rip-off? GEORGE CLEES, Silver Creek, N.Y. Pretty much. The mechanical monster just didn’t work very well, so they had to turn to the man-in-the-monkey-suit. To give him the credit he deserves, his name is Rick Baker, and he not only wore the costume, he built it. He’s a make-up man as well as stuntman — he won an Emmy for designing Cicely Tyson’s makeup for “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pit man.” DEAR DICK: I have seen the movie, “King Kong,” and it was great but, on the posters for the movie, King Kong is shown fighting Phantom jets, and in the movie he is not. Why? W.M.N., El Monte, Ca. A little artistic license by the poster painters. They ap parently felt that jets looked more dramatic on the poster. But, during the shooting, they used helicopters because they could fly lower than jets and hover. DEAR DICK: I would like to know if John Belushi, of Satur day Night, is going to quit like Chevy Chase did. If not, is he really ill? BECKY LEONARD, Tucson, Ariz. At the moment, Belushi has no plans to leave the show. He was sidelined with some leg problems and hospitalized, but is now back on the show. DEAR DICK: On the segment of Charlie’s Angels where Farrah Fawcett-Majors was on a skateboard, after she stepped on it, did she or didn’t she have a stand-in stunt girl finish the ride? JEAN WOLFE, Hebron, Ohio. I’m told by my Farrah informant that it was a stunt girl — for safety’s sake - although she does know how to ride one of those contraptions. DEAR DICK: My friend and I have a disagreement. I read that Lee Majors and Coach Johnny Majors are cousins. My friend says she read that Lee was actually born Lee Yeary and changed his name because he idolized Johnny Majors. Can you settle this? L. 8., Gate City, Va. You’re both partly right. Lee and Johnny are cousins, but Lee wasn’t born a Majors. When he became an actor, he decid ed to take the name Majors, because it was a family name. DEAR DICK: There is a big rumor that you had an affair with Anita Bryant. Is this true? D.T., Amado, Ariz. No, darn it. The closest we ever came was one day when 1 had a glass of orange juice. The most rigid diet may not decrease the uric acid level very much. But a gout patient should be on a diet that eliminates obesity or prevents it. The diet should be at least moderately restricted in fats, particularly saturated fats, and cholesterol. The diet is designed to decrease the high incidence of heart disease that occurs in gout patients. A fasting diet, or too rapid weight loss, may cause mus cle cell destruction and cause an acute attack of gout. To give you a better understan ding of gout and what to do about it I am sending you The Health Letter number 2-3, Gout, Uric Acid. Others who want this information can send 50 cents with a long, stamped, self-addressed envelope for it. Just write to me in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Sta tion. New York, NY 10019. DEAR DR. LAMB - I have been using polyunsaturated oil for frying and have read that it becomes toxic when it is heated. Now I am confused. What can I use? DEAR READER — Throw away whatever you are reading and use polyun saturated oils if you want to. It is not true that heating polyunsaturated fats will make them toxic. It is not true as some “pseudo” health magazines have stated that heating will convert polyun saturated fats to saturated fats. If you reuse the polyun saturated oils for cooking, eventually they will develop an unpleasant taste. This change will occur long before any other changes occur that would have any importance to your health.
