The retired West Building Supply Company salesman spends his leisure time making loving care play houses for little girls, doll houses and homes for pets. It all began with building dog houses once he retired from the Post Office in 1965 after 23 years of service. He took a job at West Building Supply Company and on rainy days he would build dog houses which were sold by the company. “We were really the only dog house makers in the city at that time,” the model house builder said. He built dog houses for the company during inclement weather off and on until he suffered a heart attack in 1976 when his health forced a second retirement. To keep occupied, his company agreed to keep him supplied with lumber so he could continue his dog house building. The company picks up and sells the houses. Getting so much enjoyment out of his dog house business hobby, Cochran decided to expand his activities to building doll houses. When the weather does not permit working outside, Cochran goes about the meticulous job of constructing minute pieces for two doll houses presently under construction. “I make all of the materials that I need myself,” Cochran said. Although the actual plans for the houses are purchased, Cochran refuses to buy the kits that are available with the plans. To make the siding of the house he ripped a balsa board into small slices. The asphalt roofing is the same strippings precisely scored to appear as shingles. The walls are painted, paneled and even wallpapered. The shrubbery at the front of the house is plastic foam sculptured to look like hedges. The houses come complete with stairways, fire places and bay windows. “They are just about like a real house,” Cochran said. Cochran says it takes about 3- 4 months to complete a house using his own materials, and because he takes his time. “I wouldn’t want to rush, rushing gets you tense and you are more likely to mess up,” he said. The play houses are the most recent building endeavors undertaken by Cochran. These houses are his own project and he makes them for his own sales. He says it takes on the average about 3-5 days to make the play-houses. “They don’t stay around very long once they are displayed in - the front yard,” Cochran said. Cochran, of course, reaps some financial rewards from his hobby but he does not look at it as a job. “I don’t figure it a job, I don’t get tired, I don’t worry,” Cochran said. “Its a hobby,” he continued.
