Charles Schultz:
Man in the boy
Copr © UM, UM. UMttd Faature SyMtcati. Im
CHARLIE BROWN may not be a star in the same way
as his pet SNOOPY is, but to Peanuts creator Charles
Schultz he is the world, with all its ups and downs.
When we see Charlie
Brown, cheeks burning and
palms wet, stand at the
school blackboard trying to
get an arithmetic problem
correct while the eyes of the
rest of the class bore into his
chalked mistakes, we are
really looking at Charles
Schulz, creator of Charlie
and the rest of the Peanuts
cartoon characters, as he
was some 40 years ago in St.
Paul, Minn. It is also Schulz
we see when Charlie Brown
bites into the solace of a
warm peanut butter sand
wich, fails a spelling bee,
glories in pounding erasers
after school, or loses a base
ball game ignominiously.
Not only does artist
writer Schulz admit to hav
ing once been on a baseball
team that lost a game 40 to
0, but he also confesses that
the world of Charlie Brown
is a spin-off from the child
hood world of Charles
Schulz.

clisse' The sensitive
“I am vaguely embar
rassed when I realize that
millions of people all over
the world are reading and
viewing all the dumb things
I did when I was little,” says
Schulz, whose whole
package of Peanuts re
cently browbeat and
bolstered the hapless little
title star in CBS’ repeat of
“A Boy Named Charlie
Brown.”
Charlie Brown might
never have taken shape on
the drawing board to
become a symbol of every
one’s failure-feelings had
Schulz not skipped two
grades in elementary school
and been thrust into a world
of big kids, where he felt
more acutely the pangs of
being small and young and
shy and laughable, charac
teristics which he later
blended into a Charlie
Brown.
