Ga. Power
profits up
ATLANTA (AP) - Last win
ter’s unusually cold weather in
creased demand for electricity
for heating in Georgia, helping
Georgia Power Co. increase
first-quarter 1977 profits 8.7 per
cent over those for the first
three months of 1976, the com
pany said Friday.
The company recorded net in
come of about $23 million for the
quarter ended March 31
compared to $21.2 million in the
first quarter of last year, said
Georgia Power President Rob
ert Scherer.
However, Scherer said, “con
tinued nationwide and world
wide inflation” has led to rising
operating costs — up 18 per cent
for the first quarter.
“Despite the increased first
quarter earnings, it is impor
tant to note that net income
after dividends on preferred
stock during 1976 was 12.9 per
cent below that of the previous
year,” Scherer said.
