Isolation problem in White House By FRANK CORMIER Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Ham ilton Jordan, one of President Carter’s key aides, has said iso lation is a problem at the White House. “It’s like being in a big sub marine over there,” Jordan told I Correction I I Vidalia Onions I Should Have Been I 39* Lb I (Instead of 33* Lb.) Whether Jordan was entirely serious is another matter. He made the remark following publication of a newspaper re port, widely unadmired among top White House assistants. The team leaders after the first day are the Etowah Bass Club from the Atlanta area. The anglers are coming in from a hard day on the lake. (AP) That report likened Carter’s work habits to those of the President’s old Navy boss, Adm. Hyman Rickover, “father of the nuclear submarine” and a celebrated martinet. When Jordan took the floor at 2:42 p.m. he announced he would not have time to make a speech because “I have an ap pointment with President Rick over at 3.” Jordan, who has a reputation for often being inaccessible, was asked by one contributor, “how does one get to see you?” “Next question,” he replied. As laughter subsided he sug gested that a call to his secre tary might help. Another questioner suggested that some of Carter’s early ac tions involved more symbolism than substance. Jordan’s reac tion: “It may be symbolic but I don’t have a limousine. But I get out in the morning and catch a . .•. cab, so it seems substantive to me.” Carter appeared before the same audience and indicated he remains interested in the pea nut business, although a trust arrangement has been set up to isolate him from such concerns. When Henry Melgin, a North Carolina farmer, told Carter he raised peanuts and had sold some to an Italian buyer, the President immediately asked, “Are peanuts up?” He was as sured that goober prices are rising. A luncheon guest of Vice President Walter F. Mondale was puzzled to find at his place a napkin bearing the monogram “SR." Unfolding the napery, he discovered the letters were encircled by the legend, “Southern Serves the South.” Mondale’s press secretary, Al Eisele, was at a loss to explain how a napkin from the Southern Railway reached the vice president’s table. He suggested, “It’s just part of this adminis tration’s austerity program.” Firm considers offer GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP)- The board of directors of Daniel International is expected to continue meeting in Birming ham, Ala., today to consider an offer by Fluor Corp, of Los An geles, Calif., to purchase the Greenville-based firm. The board met Wednesday, but no decision was announced. Fluor, one of the largest engi neering and construction con cerns in the world, has offered to purchase Daniel Inter national’s outstanding stock at S3O per share. The total pur chase price for the 7.1 million shares is expected to be more than s2l million. Daniel stock currently sells for about S2O per share. 404 code malfunction ATLANTA (AP) - A “very sophisticated switching ma chine” malfunctioned Wednes day night, leaving callers in the 404 area code region of north Georgia unable to place long distance calls for about five hours. A spokesman for Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co. said a problem developed in the newly installed machine in Atlanta, cutting down the availability of long distance lines, incoming and outgoing. Southern Bell spokesman Richard Yarbrough said work ers would be on the job today trying to find the cause. Page 1 — Griffin Daily News Thursday, May 5,1977 ATLANTA (AP) -Georgia could end the year with a sur plus of at least $25 million to S3O million, State Revenue Commissioner Nick Chilivis says. Based on tax collection fig ures for the past several months, Chilivis said the state probably will collect at least enough money to finance the original spending levels set for this year. That would produce a hefty surplus because in January Gov. George Busbee asked the legislature to trim the revenue estimate for the year by $24 million as a hedge against eco nomic uncertainties. Tax collections during April totaled $174.2 million, an in- don't shoot OLD CAR BRI MG IT IH TO TRADE OH A Fine NEW CHEVYS FOR LESS! CMC CHEVROLET, INC.
