But the Sonics never became the consistent winner under Russell that Schulman — and Russell — yearned for. So Schulman put his foot down and was causing me to get my fast ball up.” John has since corrected that slight error and the results can be seen in his last two starts. The veteran left-hander has aUowed but one run in 15 2-3 innings and Wednesday night looked as good as ever with a four-hit, 2-1 victory over the New York Mets. Elsewhere in the National League, the San Diego Padres turned back the Philadelphia PhiUies 4-1; the Pittsburgh Pi rates routed the Atlanta Braves 8-0; the St. Louis Cardinals beat Cincinnati 8-1; the San Francisco Giants whipped the Montreal Expos 5-1 and the Houston Astros downed the Chi cago Cubs 5-4. Padres 4, PhiUies 1 Rookie Gene Richards drove in three runs with a single and his first major league homer, and fast-working Randy Jones hurled a four-hitter as San Diego defeated Philadelphia. Richards’ homer foUowed a leadoff double by Jones in the seventh inning and provided last year’s Cy Young "award winner with a three-run lead going into the last two innings. Pirates 8, Braves 0 Dave Parker drove in four runs with a pair of two-run dou bles as Pittsburgh beat Atlanta and handed the Braves their 11th straight defeat. Parker delivered a two-run double in each of the first two innings, helping the Pirates mount an early 5-0 lead off Frank LaCorte. Pittsburgh’s Larry Demery hurled a three- decided that Russell would not return for the fifth and final year of his $250,000 contract with the club. “Bill Russell has always giv en me 110 per cent, just as he gave the Celtics and NBA fans 110 per cent as a player,” Schulman said in a prepared statement announcing agree ment with the former Boston Celtics great on settlement of his contract. The agreement calls for a hitter before being lifted in the eighth when the Braves loaded the bases. Cardinals 8, Reds 1 Lou Brock smashed three hits and passed Lou Gehrig on the aU-time major league hit pa rade and Bob Forsch pitched a four-hitter to lead St. Louis over Cincinnati. Brock’s three hits gave him 2,724 for his career and lifted him past the onetime New York Yankee great into 32nd place on the aU-time list. Giants 5, Expos 1 WiUie McCovey drove in two runs with a single and Jim Ban pitched a six-hitter as San Francisco broke a five-game losing streak with its victory over Montreal. McCovey singled home a pair of runs in the first inning, kept a third-inning rally going with an infield hit and started an eighth inning raUy with a walk. Ban struck out five and walked two and was rarely seriously challenged. During the past season, in which the Sonics finished 4042 and missed the playoffs for the first time in three years, Schul man said Russell had become “too expensive” in his dual role as coach and general manager. Schulman said he preferred that Russell continue in one or the other jobs next season, but not both. “Sam Schulman has a dream which I know he will fulfill to bring the NBA championship to the wonderful people of Seattle,” the 43-year-old Russell said in the statement. “I have mixed emotions about leaving the Sonics, but I feel I have reached a point in my career where I want to pursue other activities,” Russell said. “I find Sam Schulman to be an extremely good man, civic minded, with a goal which I wish we had realized together.” Neither Schulman nor Russell was available for further com ment. The names most mentioned as Russell’s successor as coach include Jerry Tarkanian, the successful head coach at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and Bob Hopkins, Rus sell’s cousin and assistant coach the past three seasons.
