GALLvn -- ■ J ■President Carter is bound for Europe 1 summit, Carter said, “I’d like to have a common approach among the developed industrialized nations toward dealing with inflation and unemployment.” Although this is the central challenge facing Carter and his foreign counterparts, they also will confront other minefields of conflicting national interests. In addition to discussing how to achieve economic stimu lation free of rampant inflation, the conferees will discuss other knotty issues such as help for the world’s poor nations, nucle ar policy, East-West relations and trade. The summit will occupy only part of a busy six-day schedule for Carter. He also will partici pate in a NATO summit in Lon don, fly to Geneva for talks Monday with President Hafez Assad of Syria, take part in a four-nation meeting on Berlin, and confer individually with his country’s most powerful global allies. Carter’s only respite from business will come Friday morning when he makes a four hour tour of England’s New Castle area, where his fore bears once Uved. In unofficial returns Hill re ceived 299 votes and Morris got 267. Hill was elected to his sec ond two-year term as mayor. Two persons were running unopposed for seats on the Greenville City Council. (AP)-A prisoner serving a life term for murder and armed robbery walked away from a Depart ment of Corrections maximum security facility near Columbia Wednesday. Officials said William Alston, 30, also known as Nafi A’ Al’ Hakim, “probably walked out the front gate” with other in mates who had just appeared before the Parole Board. Alston was reported missing almost four hour later after a roll call. He had been a model prisoner in both Pennsylvania, where he was sentenced and South Carolina, where he arrived in January 1976, officials said. The escape was the second from the two-year-old prison, designed for 448 inmates but housing 910. Alston is a native of Columbia who was sentenced Oct. 27,1972, in Bucks County, Pa. He came to the state in an exchange through an interstate compact that sent a South Carolinian to Pennsylvania. Kirkland Warden James Har vey said under the agreement, prisoners can be sent from a state where they commit a crime to their native state. He said two guards instead of the normal one were at the gate when the departing inmates left. All had come with members of their families for the paroles hearings.
