According to Francis Gilmere, Project Director for the Garden of Eden Nudist Village In Locust Grove, social nudism Is going to become an Important part of life in the country, with more than 900 acres devoted to nudist activities over the next three years. The Garden of Eden, located two miles west of 1-76 South on Hampton-Locust Grove Road, is a recreational facility owned and operated by the Nudist Corporation of America. It presently encompasses 241 acres and is undergoing planned unit development for a project that will more than triple its boundaries. “We’re 'no jive operation,’’ stated Gilmere in an interview Monday. “We’ve hired Atlanta engineering firms for the project and we’re financed through mortgage companies in Texas. Everything we’re doing is legal and we’re seeking a good relationship with the county.” Gilmere said his corporation has engineering contracts with the Presnell Kidd Association and Presley and Associates to begin work on the project within the next six months. Playground equipment is under contract with Childscapes, Inc. of Atlanta. Adding to the Village’s clubhouse, skeet and trap ranges, and Federal Aviation Administration registered landing strip now in use, the project is geared to cost between <2.6 and $5 million, according to Gilmere. The Corporation describes itself as “a private enterprise for the development and the advancement of social nudity In America on private property.” The Locust Grove facility has approximately 35-40 members at the present time, according to Gilmere, with an average attendance of six to eighteen couples, mostly on weekends. Membership is open by club invitation to persons over 18 years of age, married or single. If a member is married, the membership includes the member’s spouse and all unmarried dependent children until their 18th birthday, provided that the spouse and children are full-time residents of the same household as the member. The Garden of Eden maintains a clubhouse with indoor swimming pool and sauna and a club room with fireplace. Skeet and trap ranges are located on the grounds of the facility. According to Gilmere, persons who join the nudist organization do not regard the body as an object of shame or lewd exploitation. "Obscenity is only in the eyes of the beholder,” he stated. “Anyone who wants to visit the village to seek Information can enter without taking his clothes off. But anyone who stays on the grounds for an extended period of time must comply with the nudity rules of the organization. When in Rome, do as the Romans do!" Gilmere said membership in the organization is kept personal and confidential and no information is released without the written consent of members. Persons who are interested in joining the nudist facility are allowed a trial visit for the dally fee of $lO. “We believe nudity is a healthy and relaxing aspect of life," stated Gilmere. Unhealthy persuader As you’ve probably suspected, TV ads get the kids who watch them to try to in fluence their mothers' super market buying. Unfortunately, the ‘persua sion’ is usually directed at un healthy products, particularly the sweetened cereals and sugared snack foods that dominate children’s TV com mercials, according to a study released by the Department of Psychology at Columbia University’s Teachers College. “This finding would seem important to health professionals who are trying to lower the American public's consumption of sugar-saturated diets,” say Joann Paley Galst and Mary Alice White, the researchers who recently published their findings in Child Develop ment, a professional journal published by the University of Chicago press. The 41 children involved in the study ranged from 3 through 5. The researchers say most were unable to dis tinguish between TV commer cials and programming.
