Teenagers head list of lifters America’s retail businesses chalk up annual losses of more than $5 billion to shoplifting. More than half of those ap prehended for the store thefts are teenagers. “They’re not stealing home appliances and flannel nighties,” says William Meehan, vice president in charge of loss prevention at the Korvettes chain, in an ar ticle in Family Circle magazine. “They take the things they like — costume jewelry, clothing, cosmetics, leather goods, sunglasses. And records — that’s one of their biggest items.” Dr. Daniel Offer, acting chairman of the department of psychiatry at Chicago’s It’s important to wait Dr. Maria Boria of New York Medical College claims that women should wait three months before trying to con ceive when coming off birth control pills. “There has been some fear, though never substantiated, of fetal abnormalities when con ception takes place right after Pill stoppage,” says Dr. Boria in Modern Bride magazine. “But the best reason to wait several months before trying to conceive is that it is dif ficult to estimate the date of conception and fetal age when a woman conceives right off the Pill, with no first period. Michael Reese Hospital, believes shoplifting may be a normal part of the growing-up process for some teenagers. Offer, who conducted a study of normal adolescents in the Chicago area, found that 14 per cent shoplifted occasional ly. “These were young people who had never been in trouble and never will be in trouble. They experimented with shoplifting the way some kids experiment with cigarettes. They did it once or twice and never did it again.” Most researchers agree that impulsiveness is also a key factor among young shoplifters, as is defiance of authority and the desire for excitement. “We still have too many premature births in this coun try where there was a medical complication and labor was induced. At that point two weeks are very important and may make the entire difference between a healthy, viable newborn, and one that can’t breathe on his own and may suffer brain damage.” GOODE NICHOLS Furniture Co.
