Walter Mondale, Gerald Ford, Henry Kissinger and a host of top government and scientific leaders in a new national thrust to promote energy conservation. Dr. Eugene Odum, director of the university’s Institute of Ecology and a nationally recognized ecologist, and Howard Bucknell, a political scientist and former energy advisor to Jimmy Carter, are members of the ad visory board of the new Alliance for Saving Energy. Sens. Charles H. Percy and Hubert H. Humphrey created the non-profit, non political organization to encourage Americans to save energy by using more efficient buildings, tran sportation facilities, in dustrial processes and electrical generation. Mondale and Ford are honorary board chairmen of the alliance, which includes 44 appointed members, six honorary chairman and 27 U. S. senators, including Sens. Sam Nunn and Herman Talmadge of Georgia. Percy and Humphrey are chairman and co-chairman and Kissinger is board chairman of the alliance. James Schlesinger, Carter’s chief energy advisor, is honorary advisor to the group. Carter has endorsed the alliance and predicted it will “play a significant role in implementing our national policy.” Odum and Bucknell are the only two alliance ad visors from the Southeast, and the University of Georgia is the only in stitution with two board members. Among others on the advisory board are marine explorer Jacques Cousteau; David Rockefeller, president of the Chase Manhattan Bank; Lawrence Rockefeller, president of the Rockefeller Foundation; AFL-CIO Pres. George Meany; Frank Borman, former astronaut and president of Eastern Airlines; and Russell Train, former director of the En vironmental Protection Agency. Other honorary chairmen are House Majority Leader Tip O’Neill and House Minority Leader John Rhodes; Commerce Secretary Juanita Kreps; Labor Secretary Ray Marshall; Transportation Secretary Brock Adams; and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Patricia Roberts Harris. The alliance will promote the concept of “conservation energy,” which Carter has described as “the energy derived by replacing wasteful habits and technologies with more efficient Percy and Humphrey said the alliance will “try to convince every American homeowners, apartment dwellers, motorists, business leaders, labor union officials, government of ficials-that it is actually far less expensive in the long run to invest to save energy than it is to purchase energy.” They said conservation energy would cost about half the predicted cost of produced energy in 1985 saving billions of energy dollars and holding oil, gas and electricity production to replacement levels. One of the group's goals is to “reduce the political and social costs” of energy--such as American dependence on foreign oil and damage to the environment, the senators said. Odum is Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Ecology and Alumni Foundation Professor of Zoology at the university. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, he pioneered in the science and study of ecology and is author of one of the best-selling textbooks on the subject. He serves on 10 federal and scientific panels. Bucknell is a retired Navy captain who is working on a doctoral degree in political science. He was on Carter’s energy policy task force when Carter was running for president and has resear ched and written extensively about the political, public administration, policy development and organization aspects of the energy problem both in America and abroad. The Alliance for Saving Energy will be organized in 10 federal regions and will push for such incentives as long-term financing and tax breaks for thermal im provements on residential and commercial property. The group will also seek strict enforcement of federal energy standards for cars, buildings, appliances and industrial processes. (AP) — Creek Indians say the flow of tourist trade through Sumter County, the site of President Carter’s home town, would help promote an exhibit on the his tory and heritage of their people. A delegation led by Chief Neal McCormick of the Lower Creek Indian Nation has asked the Americus City Council for free access to about five acres of city property to house the exhibit.
